OVER the years rock fishos have been criticised and hounded by the media about safety and the need to wear a lifejacket when fishing the ocean rocks. As a rock fisherman for over 40 years and having been washed off myself, I totally agree on the consensus of safety on the rocks. About twenty or so years ago I was a very reluctant convert to using spinner baits. These awkward looking whirligigs looked like a clumsy mess designed by a six year old, and while they clearly caught American large mouthed bass, I saw absolutely no place for them in my lure arsenal. At that time the Hinze Dam, near my home on the Gold Coast, overflowed, releasing tens of thousands of bass into the Nerang River. Accessing productive fishing spots often means overnight stays. Camping is usually the best option. It’s cheaper and simple and most of the best spots are out of the way and camping is usually the only option. However, if you're not organised, camping can be a hassle. Finding tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, etc, takes time and I'd rather spend that time fishing. I was looking for a simple solution to make camping hassle free. I find beach fishing to be a package of total relaxation. Because I lack easy access to the ocean close to home, my bluewater fishing usually involves crossing a nasty bar that's often missing a clear channel. The crossing is never relaxing. Whilst my bass and estuary fishing is pretty laid back, it usually involves a 20 minute or more drive, and rock fishing requires constant vigilance. The beach is about two minutes away and most of the trip is along a bush shrouded dirt road, so access is easy, the journey short, and the fishing can be great. IT was mid-July, cold and the snapper had been biting well on the Gold Coast reefs over the preceding weeks. We headed out with the intention of catching a tasty feed of these delicious fish, and the conditions were almost perfect. When I arrived out on the 36 fathom reefs there were a few scattered boats but it was a Friday and we avoided the week end crowds. We soon found patches of fish scattered all along the reef and started a long drift from west to east across this long patch of broken rock and weed. Locations such as Whyalla, Arno Bay, Port Broughton, Wallaroo and Ardrossan were all destinations on the hit list for anyone wishing to boat their first +10kg red, and it generally wasn’t hard. Anglapro should be a familiar boat brand with Fisho readers. These Aussie-built tinnies have been around a while and here at Fisho we’ve had more than our fair share of test rides.
