FISHING for most of us is a way of life. It’s also a sport for many and a recreation for others, and as such, competes for participation with other sports and pastimes. One thing I’ve noticed, however, between fishing and “conventional sports” is the lack of basic teaching for newcomers. Organisers of most sports go to great lengths to grow participation and build numbers. Usually this is done at junior levels with beginner programmes aimed at nurturing kids and honing their skills within that chosen sport. It’s competitive, not on the field, but in growing numbers in different codes or sports. In fishing it’s almost assumed you inherit fishing skills; it gets passed down from parent to child like a secret code. But what if your parent doesn’t fish, or…

RECFISHWEST and its program partner Healthway recently celebrated 20 years of running SunSmart fishing clinics, an affordable way to teach kids about safe fishing practices and promote the health benefits of fishing. The WA government has supported the clinics with about $1m funding over that time, and the program has reached around 40,000 West Australians through school clinics and family fun days. Participating kids are provided with rods, reels and bait, and learn about the importance of fisheries sustainability and proper fish handling techniques. They also get messages about sun safety, and wearing wide-brimmed hats, polarised sunglasses and long-sleeved shirts, during the two-hour clinics.…

Observation is a core angling skill. Good anglers have a keen eye and a knack for noticing things. They’re first to spot the ripple of a school of nervous bait beneath the surface, or a puff of sand that signals a fleeing bream or flathead. They’ll be the first to see a flock of diving terns on the horizon, or to detect a subtle change in water clarity or tidal flow. And because they’re quick to react, they’re well-placed to capitalise on the fishing opportunities that flow from these events. I FELL in love with the Riverina region of southern NSW shortly after my Dad bought a farm on the banks of the Edward River near Deniliquin when I was 10 years old. No matter how many articles I write, or messages and emails I answer, many struggle to grasp the basics of catching jewfish. The truth is after many years and thousands of casts I’m always learning. Even newcomers have opened my eyes to something new or different with these majestic fish. Probably one of the greatest facets of jewfish is there’s always another way to catch them or another location to find them, and at times the rule book can be thrown out the window! Jewfish can be found in a multitude of environments from brackish headwaters in rivers and lakes to well offshore on reefs in waters up to 120m. SINCE last year’s AFTA tackle show I’ve had plenty of time to fish the new “Fairy Floss” colour in the Samaki Boom Bait range across a wide range of fishing environments and scenarios. It’s no secret that vibrant pink lures are renowned for producing the goods on dusky flathead. Most anglers I know want to catch a barramundi. For those in southern states, this requires a bit of travel and research. This article is an introduction to barramundi fishing aimed at giving some insight into catching this iconic fish. The methods required and the tackle used is quite different to most southern species. Barramundi are a destructive predator. In most river systems they inhabit they dominate other species. FOLLOWING two Coronial Inquiries that recommended legislation making lifejackets mandatory for rock fishers, the NSW Government implemented the Rock Fishing Safety Act, which has been in place in Sydney’s Randwick local government area for two years. The Act requires rock fishers to wear appropriate lifejackets when rock fishing or helping others rock fish within the boundaries of each relevant local government area. Two additional Councils – Northern Beaches Council in Sydney and Richmond Valley Council (Evans Head area) on the North Coast – have now “opted-in” to the Act. NSW DPI is currently working with a number of other Councils which will soon be coming onboard this important public safety initiative. WHEN I was a teenager many years ago I got right into rod building. Back then factory rods were pretty ordinary and very basic so specialised sportfishing rods were all custom built. All of my rods were custom built back then so I could get what I wanted. I had Silaflex, Sabre, Ironglass, Butterworth and Conolon blanks wrapped in Fuji and Aftco guides with cork or Hypalon grips. Back then the range of blanks was quite limited and it wasn’t unusual to have to trim light tips back or lengthen butts out to get the desired taper, action and length. LAKE Borumba is found in the south east corner of Queensland and roughly 120km north west of Brisbane. The lake is more accurately described as a man made dam and was constructed in 1964. Much unlike many our stocked impoundments, Lake Borumba really differs in that it does not carry the “open cow paddock” feel (which can often be the case of others), and is surrounded by mountains and breathtaking rainforest scenery. Hi Michael, tell us about the new Fish Pro from Sea-Doo? It’s typical for BRP to be right at the top of innovation and come out with a machine that’s really focused at the fishing market. It features a 155hp normally aspirated engine and the whole platform is what’s built on the ST3 Sea-Doo hull and it’s super stable. My first dealing with Tohatsu was almost 18 years ago when I purchased my first boat a 4.5m tinny. It came as a package with a 30HP Tohatsu. After a few trips out I worked out the 30 was a tad under power with three blokes on board. So I traded the engine for a 3cyl carby 40hp Tohatsu. Eighteen years on and I can honestly say I never had an issue with it until a wiring fault in my boat caused the stator to spike and blow the CDI unit.
