“Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll highlighted acts of heroism made by soldiers at Fort Stewart during a shooting at the base on Thursday,” Fox News reports. “Driscoll spoke of six soldiers who ‘put themselves in harm’s way’ during the attack that saw five people shot. While there will always be those people who load their carry gun up with FMJ (full metal jacket) ammunition, because they don’t want to spend the money on hollowpoints, or because they truly doubt whether they’ll ever need to use their gun but if they do cheap ball ammo “will do the job just fine,” the people who truly know—know that pistols are poor fight-stoppers to begin with, and hollowpoints seriously improve your odds—will pony up a few bucks to buy that box of JHPs (jacketed hollow points). The MP40 is a fixture in any movie involving Nazis. It was inextricably associated with the WWII German war machine. The gun’s innate notoriety makes it a perennially popular piece among collectors. Filmmakers typically artificially represent submachine guns. Bolt-action rifles were much more common. Still, around 1.1 million MP40’s were produced between 1940 and 1944. According to a combat memoire I read about a Wehrmacht infantryman on the Eastern Front, MP40’s were often issued meritoriously to enlisted soldiers who had distinguished themselves in combat. Otherwise, they equipped officers, senior NCOs, paratroopers, and armored crewmen for whom a full-sized rifle might be impractical. German bombers operating over England often carried a single MP40 as a personal defense weapon in the event of a forced landing. A great many MP40’s came home…

I think I have to finally break down and buy an HK-designed firearm. Even before Operation Nimrod, HK firearms were hot items in the US. The HK91, the semi-auto version of the G3, had been the survivalist magazine article rifle of the 1970s, but when the SAS kicked in the windows of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, the firearm everyone saw was the MP5, and the HK fans had to have one. In 1859, the Norwegian navy ordered five hundred French-made Lefaucheux pinfire revolvers and five years later, purchased 1,500 similar revolvers designated “revolverpistol M/1864.” In 1882, they purchased 9.4mm Nagant revolvers from the Belgian firm of Fabrique d Armes Emile et Leon Nagant and the following year adopted it as the Nagant Revolver M/1883 and in 1885 an additional 150 revolvers were obtained. In 1888, the Norwegian navy purchased a number of 7.5mm Swedish-pattern revolvers from Nagant. Three years later, the army obtained some, but it took two years of trials before it was adopted as the 7,5m/m Nagant Revolver M/1893.
