Architect Elizabeth Diller didn't initially set out to remake New York City's urban landscape—or, for that matter, to build anything at all. ELLE DECOR: This house is in the Hollywood Hills and looks quite new. Did it need much work when your clients bought it? CHAD EISNER: Not really. The house was built in 1972 and then remodeled in 2006 by architect C. J. Bonura, who worked for Frank Gehry for six years before starting his own firm. The first owner was designer Mark Schomisch, and the second was a British reality- television mogul. ED: What were the major changes? CE: Actually, there were no major changes. Christopher Gow and Henrique Faria have come up with a simple formula for decorating their midtown Manhattan apartment. Gow is in charge of the objects, while Faria handles the artwork. This division of responsibility perfectly coincides with their respective professions. Harira, an aromatic, warming tomato-and-bean-based soup, is a staple in Morocco. Every region of the country has its own version, using various legumes, pastas, meat, and spices. We serve this harira with chickpeas and green lentils at Boulud Sud, my Mediterranean-influenced restaurant in Manhattan. I like to use merguez, a spiced lamb sausage, which adds a bold punch of flavor, but it's not essential. I prefer fennel instead of the typical celery used in the mirepoix vegetable base, as fennel offers that sweet note of anise. For a finishing touch, sprinkle on some fresh herbs and add a squeeze of lemon juice, whose acidity brightens the earthy, exotic flavors. Seven years ago, when Christopher Daniels moved from Charlottesville, Virginia, to New York City to live an artist's life, he telephoned Alice Childress, the only person in the city he knew from his hometown. Taking an irreverent approach to traditional forms and techniques, British designer John Reeves crafts high-style furniture with an edge "A lot of my work is memory-based," says the British designer John Reeves, wistfully recalling his family's cluttered sitting rooms when he was growing up in the county of Lancashire and the eclectic appeal of charity-shop furniture. This is not to say that his designs resemble shabby secondhand goods, but rather that he has taken the clean lines of minimalism and given them a nostalgic twist. Houston's renowned Menil Collection celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala where art took center stage The late Houston art collectors John and Dominique de Menil were avatars of taste and sophistication, belying the stereotype of Texans as brash, uneducated hicks. So it was only natural that the sold-out benefit in November to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Menil Collection reflected the couple's passion for understatement and elegance—without cutting into the fun that Texans demand. The party was a tribute to the artists the de Menils loved, most notably Yves Klein, whose work inspired the evening's color scheme. Charm tends to be evanescent—yet two of the most iconic midcentury designs have embodied that elusive quality for more than 50 years. George Nelson's Marshmallow sofa and Ball clock remain among the most popular furnishings of the postwar era. But Nelson wasn't the only person involved in their creation. And charm, wit, and invention remain hallmarks of the man who did design both, Irving Harper—even today, at the age of 96. Harper certainly had a flair for working with the best. Designers Chuck Chewning and Heather Moore size up these versatile little wonders that can work in virtually any room and take on any number of roles In its humblest forms, the stool has long provided a seat for milkmaids, tavern regulars, and shopkeepers. The grander versions favored by Egyptian pharaohs and the Greeks and Romans are hardly ancient history: Those designs have provided inspiration for such furniture makers as T. H. Last fall, the contemporary-art world was buzzing with news of two big gallery openings to the north of Paris, on the unfashionable side of le périphérique. In the living room of Mathilde Labrouche's home in southwest France is a bed of her own design. It was modeled after an old meat safe and features a rooflike structure. It's covered with traditional linen and hemp blankets made in Ukraine. "I've always liked to create beds," she says. "I think the world needs rest. We're in perpetual motion, and I like people to be able to relax." Her dream, she adds, is to install a bed in a kitchen someday. In fact, one of her brothers spent his wedding night in what is now her kitchen. Labrouche's parents bought the property in the early 1990s. In the early 1990s, Tamzin Greenhill—a Londoner then in her late teens—dreamed of becoming a decorator. But that was before the lanky blond stepped in front of the cameras. Soon, she was a successful model—one of a pack of wispy young beauties, including Kate Moss, that the press dubbed waifs.
