Since then, the British tastemaker, who describes his style as "slicked-up comfort," has branched out from glassware and decanters to everything from furniture to fabric, lighting, and wallpaper. As the head of his family's design firm, Barnaba Fornasetti has an innate sense for reinterpreting the whimsical furniture and decorative objects created by his late father, Piero, whose inimitable style has captivated the design world for decades. At his home in Milan, Barnaba has been just as faithful in honoring tradition, turning the ancestral residence into a living tribute to the Fornasetti style. Located in the Città Studi district, the red, Venetian-style villa is tucked away in the shade of an old garden. Tucked in the alleyways behind Moscow's imposing Dynamo Stadium is a manor house that incongruously evokes a Renaissance villa. Matvey Manizer, a Soviet-era sculptor, built the house for his wife and children. "Things were different in those days," says Gugo Manizer, Matvey's son, himself a celebrated painter. "In 1951, our father was given a plot of land. Everything, down to the purchase of bricks and nails, required special permission." Despite political changes, Matvey's works have proved enduring: His monument to Indonesian freedom fighters still stands in one of Jakarta's main squares. Although this elegantly updated 1860s apartment in the 7th arrondissement of Paris appears to have survived its long use entirely unscathed, when designer Klavs Rosenfalck first saw it, in 2008, the years had indeed left telltale signs, both in wear and aesthetic "upgrades." Being unoccupied since 1963 hadn't helped its condition, either, although disuse had protected the original architecture. "The ornamentation was pretty much in place," says Rosenfalck, "some of it hidden under plywood, some under 150 years of dirt, which was so touching." Rosenfalck, a modernist Dane who has lived for many years in Paris and who owns a popular design shop, was the force behind turning the dusty relic into a comfortable 2,300-square-foot home for a bachelor executive in the health-care industry. The Italian island of Pantelleria lies between Sicily and Tunisia, closer to Africa than Europe. Scarcely known in the U.S., the Mediterranean outpost has had its share of celebrity residents, including French film icon Gérard Depardieu and Calypso, the nymph of Homer's Odyssey. Since the late 1970s Pantelleria has also been home, at least some of the time, to the internationally renowned Italian architect and designer Flavio Albanese. A dedicated modernist, Albanese creates environments that are angular, clean, and white—in a word, urban. But when he first saw the hardscrabble volcanic landscape of Pantelleria, he says, the effect was "as if I had been electrocuted. I had found my Shangri-la, my physical and spiritual Eden." Part of the attraction was the close relationship of the island's indigenous architecture to nature.…

While the rest of the world still seeks out 20th-century classics of Danish modernism—pieces by Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner—one forward-looking couple in Denmark created a 21st-century home that's rooted in an older tradition. Ole Damm, owner of SOS, a popular Danish sportswear brand, and his wife, Anita Heske, live with two of their children in Klampenborg, a rural, upscale suburb fewer than 10 miles north of Copenhagen, where the nearest neighbors are the 2,000 deer that inhabit a park that was once a royal hunting ground. FORNASETTI STYLE A century after Piero Fornasetti's birth, the Italian artist-designer's whimsical furniture and accessories remain as intriguing as ever. His son, Barnaba, now helms the firm and keeps the family legacy alive, both at work and at his exuberantly decorated Milan villa (page 94). He also carries on one of his father's long-standing traditions: creating a limited-edition calendar plate to ring in the New Year. For the 2013 plate, Barnaba adapted a self-portrait drawn by Piero in 1943. In 18th-century France, the latest bedroom accessory, the chamber pot, prompted the invention of a new piece of furniture. Early bedside tables—some with legs styled after classical columns—kept the vessels from view by way of a hidden cabinet. Today, nightstands fulfill a different purpose, but one no less important, providing a place for a lamp, reading material, and more. For designer Shawn Henderson, a drawer or shelf is a plus. "The more storage, the better," he says. Another key element is size: His rule of thumb is to have the nightstand no more than two inches taller than the mattress. Q: What's the biggest trend in the design of second homes? A: They're getting much smaller and more energy efficient. A few years ago, people realized they don't need a 15,000-square-foot second home. Today, the largest homes we are designing are less than 7,000 square feet. Many of our projects are under 3,000 square feet. Exterior space can expand the feel of a small home. Q: What's more important—the house or the location? A: To me, the property is the most important element. It must have wonderful views, privacy, good exposure to natural light, and, ideally, a natural water feature and mature trees. With organically shaped brass-tipped walnut legs supporting a hefty rectangular top, the console that Ico and Luisa Parisi designed for Singer & Sons in the early 1950s is not the kind of piece that's easily forgotten. "It has an insect-like quality that shows exactly what postwar Italian design was," says auctioneer Richard Wright, who has sold more than a dozen of the consoles over the years. "It is all about lightness and a very visual suspension," he notes, pointing out that the Parisis' creation "was a big commercial hit." When they purchased the 17th-century cottage in the early 1990s, Wingardh and his wife, Karin, loved its coastal location in the countryside, and its classic, though cramped, layout. With time they added to the house, being careful to retain its charm while adapting it to 21st-century needs. Two annexes were built, one on each side of the main house. One houses the children's rooms, while the other was designed as a work studio. Then came a long porch facing the sea, a veritable open-air living room. Finally, in 2007, they added a second story to the main building, which enabled the creation of a new master bedroom on the upper floor and a dining room on the ground floor. Think of Casper Vissers as the hidden force behind Moooi. He launched the Dutch design firm in 2001 with superstar industrial designer Marcel Wanders, the team's art director; Vissers serves as Moooi's CEO. The company—whose name is inspired by mooi, the Dutch word for beautiful—brings a fresh, humorous approach to lighting, furniture, and accessories. A career in design was a left turn for Vissers, who once worked as a sales manager for a lumber company. While visiting London's 100% Design show in the late 1990s, he met Tom Dixon, who hired him as his representative in the Netherlands. Not long after, Wanders contacted Vissers with an offer to work together. Sheer serendipity? Perhaps, but credit Vissers's keen sense for marketing and his impeccable eye for design. In the early 1970s, an abandoned cement factory on the western fringe of Barcelona stood as a crumbling relic of Spain's industrial past. Where some people would have been daunted or deterred by the vast and derelict site, the architect Ricardo Bofill was inspired. He envisioned it as the dramatic setting for his home and offices. "I wanted to create something halfway between a ruin and a cloister," he says of La Fábrica, as the complex is now known. When Bofill, one of Spain's most renowned architects, arrived here, the grounds contained enormous silos, underground tunnels, machine rooms, and a smokestack. The project began with the careful and judicious demolition of about 70 percent of the factory. "The half-ruined structure was a magic box of wonderful, surreal elements," he says.…
