“I wanted to do a rental that has a different essence from all of the others here in Mérida.”ARANZA GARCÍA, DESIGNER When architect Aranza García purchased a house in her hometown of Mérida, Mexico, around the corner from Chuch Estudio, her vibrant design manufactory, she went in with a small budget and zero plans or renderings. When I was still in architecture school at Columbia University, I found this wooden object at a studio sale. I think it was a prototype. It was under a table and didn’t have a price tag, but I asked if I could buy it and they sold it to me for ten dollars. I’ve used it to hold flowers and candles, but mostly I just display it like a sculpture. I have no idea why it was made, because I’ve never seen that studio produce anything similar—it might not have even become a product. MONTREAL / @CLARAJORISCH Clara Jorisch On her website, Clara Jorisch describes herself as a “self-taught designer and crafts(wo)man from Montreal” whose work “streams from useless ideas and integrates deliberate imperfections.” Though her background is in graphic design, Jorisch formed her final project at the University of Quebec in Montreal around a catalog for what became her debut furniture collection. It included a limited series of hand-cut mirrors with “broken lines” designed to play with visual perception. Recent work has been similarly quirky: The Pouf collection includes soft tuffets of upholstered foam wrapped in rope so that they bulge in various places. Her Melting Glass tables have a similarly contorted profile, with ovoid tops supported by slumping glass legs that look like vases that are wilting. For Jorisch, who says her…

Inside a row of converted factory buildings in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Kiki Goti and Vincent Staropoli’s vibrant apartment opens up to a bright living room with a wall of windows. Enough daylight streams into the modest space to create a New York loft version of indoor/outdoor Mediterranean living. Kiki, a designer from Thessaloníki, Greece, and Vincent, a Paris-born filmmaker whose family is Italian, wanted the look of their rental, with its high ceilings, white walls, and rough wooden floors, to reflect their Mediterranean backgrounds and feel influenced by the warmer climates of southern Europe—while staying within the limits of their lease.
