We shouldn’t delude ourselves: We can’t shop our way out of ecological disaster. Obviously, no gadget you can put under your sink to save water is going to keep the earth’s temperature from rising—at least not by itself. But we should all still try to lessen the environmental impact of our homes. By switching to electric cooktops. Installing heat pumps. Or just saving paper with refreshing bidets. Room to Grow

Surrounded by rows of cabernet grapevines, olive trees, a centenary oak, and bright blue sky, this cedar-clad prefab looks as if it has always stood on its cinematic site in Healdsburg, California. But the 540-square-foot Dwell House landed on the lot only a few months ago—just in time for Thanksgiving, which was homeowner Leslie Scharf’s plan. The Earthship, Circa 2023

Highway 64 is a lonely, two-lane blacktop that runs east-west in northern New Mexico, spanning the Taos Plateau, part of the Rio Grande rift. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise in the east. The sky is vast. After the road crosses the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge heading west, the river, a slender green ribbon 650 feet below, bends north, and they come into view: curiosities half-hidden in hillsides, reminiscent of hobbit holes, Tatooine caves, or ancient cliff dwellings—earthships. Artful Restoration

After years of trying out life in the hustle and bustle of cities like London and Chicago, artist John Brooks and his husband, Erik Eaker, were looking to permanently settle into a quiet oasis in Louisville, Kentucky, close to John’s family. Having lived in the Mies van der Rohe tower at 860 Lake Shore Drive, the couple had their hearts set on a midcentury-modern house. “We also wanted to stay close to the city and to Cherokee Park,” John explains—two requirements that added challenge to their search. When you buy a centuries-old château in Normandy, France (and who among us hasn’t?), you do expect that it’ll require a whole mess of renovations. But the dreams of a livable château mostly involve Ephronian kitchens and lush gardens and not the reality, which is dry rot—not quite as romantic, but vital to fix. So one of the first things Philipp and Anna Mayrhofer did when they purchased their roughly 7,000-square-foot château near the town of Honfleur, on the Normandy coast, was to make sure that the 18th-century home stayed warm and dry. “If you don’t heat a house in this area, in the winter it gets very moist, and then you have dry rot, which can be a huge problem,” says Philipp. The Mayrhofers’ solution, which they documented on…

FIGHTING FUTURE FIRES

To step into Barbara Ferris’s new house, you have to first grapple with what took out the old one. A charred black curve of eucalyptus arcs up the front door—it’s a handle but also a piece of the neighbor’s tree, which exploded in the November 2018 Woolsey wildfire. The fire first sparked 17 miles northeast, then burned all the way here, to the Ferrises’ front door on Point Dume in Malibu. For years, retired attorney Dale Schreiber and his wife, Lois, planned to transition from New York City to the suburbs of South Orange, New Jersey, to be closer to some of their children and grandchildren. The couple are avid collectors of art and midcentury furniture, and when they came across a 1969 home designed by Herbert Beckhard, a business partner of Marcel Breuer, within walking distance of two of their four children, they leaped. When Martin and Casey Johnston added a stand-alone studio to their property in a flood-prone region on the east coast of Australia, they baked disaster resilience into the design. They just didn’t expect to have its limits tested so soon. Within a month of the project’s completion, a record-breaking flood inundated their quiet, coastal town of New Brighton, in New South Wales. Even as Andrew and Hannah Linn were moving into their first home, in Washington, D.C., in late 2015, the soon-to-be-newlyweds were hunting for the next. Their small apartment “was the perfect place for that moment, but we never even pretended that it was the forever place,” says Hannah, the director of operations for a consulting firm. When the big earthquake comes, and with it a tsunami, I have a list of things I’d take with me in my go bag. Obviously the main thing is just to get out of the house with my husband and kids as fast as possible.
