In an April study in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, scientists found that nearly 20 percent of 204 COVID-19 patients from hospitals in China’s Hubei province, where the outbreak began, had gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea — usually in addition to the usual fever or respiratory symptoms. In another study in the same journal, of COVID-19 patients in Wuhan, China, who had mild disease onset, almost a quarter had gastrointestinal symptoms only, less than half had respiratory symptoms alone, and the remaining third exhibited both.
It’s critical to understand these sometimes-mild symptoms, since those who are infected may not realize it and thus may not take the necessary precautions to keep from spreading the disease.
