The directors of the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame are delighted to announce the late Stuart Bradbury has been elected to membership of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, based at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Florida. ‘Stu’, who was elected to membership of the British Hall of Fame in 2017, becomes one of only five individuals to hold membership of both British and International Halls of Fame, joining Sydney Allard and Dennis Priddle (UK) and Carl Olson and Don Garlits (USA). Stu was appointed Chief Starter at Santa Pod Raceway in 1968 and served until the late 1980s. He joined several colleagues to establish the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2006 and chaired the organisation from its beginning until his death.…

Wow, there is apparently something in the Northamptonshire water this year. Something that is having a marked affect at the goings on at Santa Pod. We’ll bring you full coverage of the Euro Final Shootout in a future issue, but I make no apology for mentioning a little taster of the action here. To start, Mark Todd ran the quickest ever Street Eliminator pass on the Saturday, 6.833 at 210.01mph, backing up his earlier 6.906 / 206.94 to set a new class ET record. Records are there to be broken, though, and that’s just what Todd did on the Sunday when he ran 6.880 / 212.77. Speed Week ’21 Bonneville can be a very tough place to race and this year, because of international travel restrictions, foreigners (to the US) such as Brit racer, Geoff Stilwell, couldn’t even get there. “Mick’s Paint spent the whole Covid period preparing our recording-holding Lucas Oil Land Speed Racer 7707 and in the end we could not travel. It was devastating,” he commented. Fortunately, domestic racers were able to attend, and more than 100 records were set during the week-long event. The big news was the return of Danny Thompson (D/T), son of the late Mickey Thompson, driving the streamliner to an amazing, record-setting 385.182mph. After a Covid-induced hiatus last year, the Mopar Euro Nationals was back with a bang, albeit tinged with a note of sadness due to the untimely passing in November 2020 of one of its leading lights, Tony Oksien. Running from January to the end of May 2022 at the Coventry Transport Museum, the Women in Motorsports exhibition will showcase inspirational women involved in all areas of British motorsport, from the early 20th century through to the present day. The most exciting part is Hannah Thomas, formerly NSRA PRO, and British Drag Racing Hall of Fame’s Lesley Wright, are working together to have female drag racers and hot rodders of all ages represented. With all the metalwork completed on the body and pick-up bed, we started to talk to our local Black Metal Paintshop about prepping it for colour. Fortunately, they were in a position to take it right away, which was great as so often waiting for a space in a body shop can delay a project. Once in their workshop, preparation started by giving the whole body a light sand to key it and remove any trace of surface rust, and then the boys started to put a thin layer of filler on to get the metal straight. Sanding, more filler, more sanding and, many hours later, it was time for the first layer of primer. What we here at CC like best about it, though, is it’s a genuine 21st century re-imagining of the classic 1950’s Morris J-Type.
