Time for a fresh start? After a few years and several coats of paint, the original layers will be weakened and will start to detach from the surface of the boat. The bottom will become pockmarked and look like the surface of the moon. If the time has come to put in some bottom work on the hard and take all the antifouling paint off your classic plastic, you should consider adding a barrier coat, particularly if your hull is prone to osmotic blistering. In the simplest terms, a watermaker pushes seawater through a series of filters that strain out successively smaller particles, starting with seaweed and critters in the first filter and ending with salt and bacteria in the final membrane. A pump or pumps are used to pull the water into the boat and build up the required pressure (about 800 psi) to force the water through a membrane — that’s the reverse osmosis, or “RO,” part. PROJECTS The chain locker in the forward-most part of the bow of my Down East 45 schooner, Britannia, was totally inadequate for the 250 feet of 3?8-inch chain that I considered a minimum for my 22-ton boat. Every time we weighed anchor — even when only part of the rode had been laid — the chain always piled up in the locker and jammed the windlass. The amount of water you’ll need to make depends on your cruising destinations, personal habits and how many people you usually sail with. Will you be offshore or in remote locations for extended periods, or near civilization where you’ll have easy access to inexpensive dock fill-ups? The three most common categories of watermakers are defined by what type of power source is used to drive them: AC current, DC current or a belt connected directly to the engine. Which one to choose is dictated by your cruising style and your boat’s setup. Belt-driven watermakers are directly connected to the engine, which means you will need to have space in the engine compartment for the installation. Here are five of my absolute favorite galley products that have proved their usefulness over years of living aboard. BAKING STONE Does your oven bake unevenly? A baking stone (also known as a pizza stone) will even out hot spots and help the oven quickly return to temperature after the door is opened. For use on a boat, get one that’s ½-inch thick so it’s not liable to crack, and make sure there is at least a 1-inch air gap on all four sides once it’s in the oven. Most storm-damaged bargains are offered “as is, where is,” with the boat still semi-sunken in place along the shore. Here’s a quick-and-dirty plan to rescue them for pennies. First off, temporarily patch any holes with two pieces of plywood and some foam rubber, placing one wooden patch inside and the other outside, with bolts between them holding them tight. You can also toss a truck, car, airplane, motorcycle or bike inner tube between the plywood and the damaged hull to achieve semi-watertightness. Doug Peterson — the San Diego-based legend who designed the C&L Marine 36, along with dozens of other boats — passed away from a long battle with cancer on June 26, 2017. Sailing fans around the world mourned his loss, but found it oddly fitting it happened on the same day the United States lost the America’s Cup to New Zealand, as Peterson had previously helped design winning AC boats for both countries. He was 71. Peterson started his career in the early ’70s, after apprenticing with renowned designer Wendell “Skip” Calkins, and quickly earned a reputation for drawing slippery boats that won races. CopperCoat (coppercoatusa.com) is different from traditional anti fouling paints in several ways, most notably that it ’ s not a paint — it ’ s a two-part epoxy that is mixed with 99 percent pure copper. SYSTEMS Fresh water is one of the few things the Fhuman body cannot do without. A person can survive several weeks without food but only three or four days without water. U.S. Navy and Coast Guard life rafts include manual desalinators developed by the Katadyn Group, and it’s relatively inexpensive for cruisers to have these handoperated emergency units too.
