Cup of coffee in hand, I sat at my desk and logged into my emails to see my boss was asking me to do a story on regenerative medicine. Going about my job as a journalist, I did some research and one name kept popping up – Paolo Macchiarini. He was a Swiss-born Italian cardiothoracic surgeon who'd made a name for himself as one of the world's leading regenerative medicine researchers. This July, shamed secondary school teacher Rebecca Joynes, 30, was jailed for six-and-a-half years for sexual offences. Shockingly, one of Joynes’ teen victims, known only as Boy B, fathered her baby while she was on bail for sex crimes against another teenage boy. What was the inspiration for this novel? There were many different points of inspiration, but two were the fires that swept through Maui last year, and the arrest of a serial rapist I wrote about years ago as a newspaper reporter. It had been established in previous books that Renée Ballard's estranged mother was living off-grid in Maui. When the real fires occurred, I knew this would be something that would worry Ballard and it was an opportunity to open up that part of her character.
