The founder of ethical retailer, Inland Sea, is pledging to offset one gigaton of CO2 by 2030 – and he has the T-shirts to prove it. After Adam Costello learned of the benefits of seaweed as a mass absorber of CO2, he raised nearly £15,000 via crowdfunding to invest in seaweed farms, and launched a 100% biodegradable clothing range made from seaweed fibres. Due to its speedy growth rate, seaweed can absorb up to 20 times more CO2 from the atmosphere than forests. ‘Seaweed is a realistic solution to the climate crisis, and we want to bring this to the government’s attention,’ he says (inlandsea.co.uk).…

Growing up in Edinburgh and La Rochelle in France, I’ve always lived near the coast. I’m very physical and I’m at my happiest when I’m in the water – like a seal pup – I love swimming, surfing and sea life. The sea is cleansing and the closest a human can get to being in a different world, there’s an element of danger and the unknown about it. It feels mysterious, which is very humbling. My mum lives close to North Berwick in Scotland, where you can see the obsidian dark blue of the North Sea, and enjoy places like Yellowcraigs Beach (pictured) and Gullane. Actor and activist Joanna Lumley is leading a nationwide campaign to help protect vulnerable marine species from the ‘needless’ detonations of World War II bombs at sea. Writing in an open letter to Number 10, she has urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to support the ‘low order deflagration’ method of ordnance disposal, which allows the contents of the explosive to ‘burn out’ from within rather than existing detonations, which can lead to hearing loss, mass stranding – even death – for traumatised dolphins and whales. After launching Stop Sea Blasts in late 2020, Ms Lumley has received the backing of over 100,000 members of the public to call on the government to make this change. St Martin’s is such an outdoors place in all seasons. I might be out walking our dog, or going for a dip in the sea at high tide, or taking the children to the beach to swim and spot birds. We don’t have much choice in what we do, but that means there’s not so much distraction either and life goes at a slower pace. Living by the sea is a dream many of us secretly hold. Breathing in coastal air, watching the waves and listening to the sound of the ocean creates a sense of calm and wellbeing. When three days’ notice was given for the second lockdown last November, our catamaran Luna was snug in Weymouth Harbour, Dorset. We had a decision to make; do we take to the high seas and sail south to warmer climes, or brave the winter in our noninsulated boat, safe in harbour?
