Adding the final touches to the Christmas tree, my mum Marjorie, 69, stood back and admired it proudly.

It was last Christmas, and like every year, Mum had taken so much pride in decorating the tree, while my dad Kevin, 72, prepared the food for the buffet.
As children, my brother Carl, 44, and I loved Christmas, and Mum always went out of her way to make it magical for us, even writing letters from Father Christmas to pin to our stockings.
