The question of which new car one should buy is one I have frequently encountered throughout my career, but it’s always somewhat veiled. As former editor John Bentley used to exclaim to the CAR team, “Were we sensible, we’d all be driving white Toyota Corollas.” His reasoning was sound, of course. The Corolla’s legacy speaks for itself; its maker is well respected and can offer after-sales support in nearly every South African borough, while the choice of a white paint finish makes repairs easier and resale values healthier. And yet, while many South Africans still resonate with the sensible, but still-excellent Corolla nameplate, others seek sound buying advice, quietly hoping the answer will entail a vehicle already attached to their heartstrings.
