The Western Cape Education Department has failed in its legal bid to have an order overturned which ruled it was to reinstate and pay back more than R360 000 to a Primrose Park Primary School teacher that it fired following claims of misconduct involving claims by learners. Lee-Ann Snyders, who had been working at the school since 2013, lost her job following a 2019 disciplinary hearing that found her guilty on 14 charges relating to misconduct. She was accused by a group of Grade 5 learners of name-calling and using derogatory language and turned to arbitration to have her dismissal overturned. The arbitrator at the time found that the learners had fabricated allegations. Snyders taught the Grade 5B learners at the time, and the charges were based on complaints raised…

A car owner has taken legal action against Discovery Insure as it refused to reimburse her for the theft of her vehicle, as the insurer claimed that the tracker device in the vehicle was faulty. Nicole Hoolsema (plaintiff) turned to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, for an order compelling Discovery to pay her for her loss. The plaintiff concluded an insurance agreement with the insurer in January 2021. In terms of the agreement, Discovery insured Hoolsema’s vehicle against perils such as theft, hijacking and damages. The insurer’s obligation to indemnify the plaintiff is conditional upon the installation of a Discovery Insure Crowd Search motor vehicle tracking device. The City’s law enforcement officers have made 197 arrests in the past week, seeing an increase in drunk driving and confiscated hundreds of units of alcohol during valedictory celebrations.
