THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has seized a range of assets from three men accused of orchestrating an intricate Ponzi scheme. The NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane said that with the help of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and the SA Reserve Bank (SARB), they were able to seize vehicles, game farms and holiday homes from various parts of the country including Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and the North West. She explained that the assets belonged to the accused – Kelvin Cholwich, Theunis Johannes Schoeman, Johan de Clerk and their associates – who allegedly benefited from the scheme. The three people facing charges in connection with the grand theft at president Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm in Limpopo in 2020 have appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court. Imanuwela David, 39, the man accused of being the mastermind behind the February 2020 theft, was remanded in custody until the next court date in August. He is charged alongside Froliana Joseph, who was a domestic worker at the Phala Phala farm, and her brother, Ndilinasho Joseph. Ramaphosa’s former housekeeper, Froliana, and her brother Ndilinasho, who are accused number two and three, were granted R5 000 and R10 000 bail, respectively in November last year. Over 17 000 inmates registered Department of Correctional Services (DCS) Minister Ronald Lamola praised the country’s correctional services for ensuring prisoners were able to vote in a safe and controlled setting. Speaking following a visit to various correctional centres yesterday, Lamola said 17 129 inmates registered to vote. According to the department, the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria, in which convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester remains behind bars, recorded the highest number of registered inmate voters, sitting at 2 908. “We have created a conducive environment to enable inmates to vote in a safe and controlled setting. Investigations by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) have led to the arrest of illegal practitioners in Durban recently. In a statement on Tuesday, HPCSA acting head of division: corporate affairs Priscilla Sekhonyana said HPCSA Inspectorate Office members, in collaboration with law enforcement, arrested one more individual for practising while not registered with the council. “Officials, investigating a complaint of an unregistered person practising in the Durban Central area, discovered that a 39-year-old, Zinhle Precious Buthelezi was practising illegally. The teachers who were killed in a head-on collision between the taxi they were travelling in and a truck in Limpopo were all SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) members, the union says.
