The time has come for my Nu Venture Compact microcamper’s maiden voyage! As I previously explained, I had only managed one shakedown trip in it so far, and that was a bit of a chilly experience, shall we say (the Compact still doesn’t have heating. It’s next up on the list of upgrades). Apart from needing lots of extra layers and a sleeping bag liner, that overnighter was useful. TANDOORI CHICKEN Nothing says summer like a barbecue, but cooking on a grill atthe campsite doesn’t always have to be boring burgers and burnt sausages. Here is a really simple recipe for a tasty chicken dish with an Indian flavour that you can prepare on a barbecue or a gas or electric grill outside your campervan. It will take a bit of planning and prep but it doesn’t need much in the way of cooking skills, and as soon as you get a whiff of those delicious spices you’ll know it was worth the effort. It’s rare for a test ’van to attract as much attention – and positive comment – on site as this, but there’s no denying that the M-Star is a handsome bit of kit. With its Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels, dark blue paint and privacy glass – plus graphics that are not overdone – it has a suitably premium appearance. There are other upmarket touches, too, such as the chrome bars on the grille and the illuminated step at the sliding door, which has a soft-close function. We like the Renault Trafic. It drives well, has a comfortable ride quality and, above all, always seems to be competitively priced. So, it’s good – at last – to see some more campervans using this French base vehicle. First came the Bürstner Playa C 500, which was launched at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf last September, and now Adria’s Active Duo is available in the UK, with the first examples already arriving on dealer forecourts (the very first of the 2024-season ’vans!). There are times when campervanning involves carefully planned, epic voyages, and times when it offers a spontaneous, sneaky few days away without traveling too far. For us, living in East Sussex, a quick hop over the border into Kent gives a welcome change of scenery without having to clock up the miles behind the wheel. 1 SCOTLAND NORTH COAST 500 516 MILES The North Coast 500 is the ultimate UK road trip and one of the best in the world – an epic 516-mile circular driving route around the most northerly tip of the UK mainland. It boasts incredible coastal scenery, with a new spine-tingling vista around every corner. They call it the world’s largest VW Transporter show and I’m not arguing. This September, literally thousands of campervans, their owners – plus day visitors – and more will come together for a weekend under the Busfest banner. They’ve been doing it each year for the past 10, too. Despite reviewing and owning VW-based campervans for over three decades, last year was my first visit. The Renault Trafic is often overlooked as a base vehicle for small campervans, overshadowed by the Ford Transit Custom as an alternative to the ubiquitous VW. But maybe that’s changing as the new Ford is awaited and both Adria and Bürstner are launching Trafic-based pop-tops in the UK. Those have side kitchen layouts, though, while this new Tour-CL from Concept Multi-Car (CMC) is already on sale and has a totally different, rear kitchen floorplan, as well as an on-board cassette toilet and twin sliding doors.
