Rupununi Savannah
Ranches here provide excellent bases from which to roam grasslands, wetlands and forests by 4WD vehicle, boat, canoe, horseback or on foot. You may well spot giant river otter, giant anteater, woolly, spider and howler monkey, black caiman (shown here), anaconda, capybara, ocelot and numerous species of birds, including the red siskin and sun parakeet. The Kanuku Mountains, meanwhile, have one of South America’s densest populations of harpy eagle.
Iwokrama Forest
The Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development manages this 3,710-square-kilometre swathe of rainforest in central Guyana for the benefit of wildlife and the 16 local communities that have a stake in the area’s ecotourism.
