THE FIRST TIME I SHOOK HANDS with freelance writer Dwight Schuh, he was wearing a backpack of his own design, a wide grin, and his trademark eyeglasses and beard stubble. Surprisingly, he also wore wool knickers, complementary knee-length socks, and hiking shoes. Although I’d previously spoken to this backcountry elk and deer-hunting guru by phone — and seen plenty of book and magazine pictures of him — I’d never met or seen photos of any hairy-chested North American bowhunter dressed up like a Swiss yodeler.
Dwight, I quickly learned, was not your stereotypical bow-hunter. Self-confident, consistently successful, intuitive, and intelligent, yet noticeably soft-spoken and always humble, he obviously marched to a different drumbeat — and was completely comfortable in his own skin, living life his way.
