An intimate dawn blessing at Waiheke’s Kennedy Point in March marked the start of on-site construction for New Zealand’s first island destination marina. Christchurch’s Shark Seats has just relocated to larger premises following massive demand for its boat suspension seats – largely fuelled by the America’s Cup. “With the greater speeds of these foiling yachts,” explains Shark Seats owner Paul Zwaan, “chase boats were entirely redesigned to keep up. Our hydraulic suspension seats absorb the enormous loads resulting from travelling at high speeds over choppy seas. “With chase boats travelling at over 50 knots, the humans on board are the weakest link in these robust vessels. Suspension seats enable the skipper to keep his eyes on the horizon to react quickly.” More than 150 Shark Seats have been installed on the Salthouse, Rayglass and Q-West vessels attending the America’s Cup. After sea trials in Auckland, T/T Skorpios was shipped to Europe to join her mothership, the carbon-built 38m (125-foot) Club Swan high-performance superyacht S/Y Skorpios, currently under construction in Finland. Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders (LSB) has many years’ experience building superyacht tenders, but T/T Skorpios is the first Catalyst from the yard since the company acquired the moulds from Salthouse Boatbuilders in 2019. T/T Skorpios is Catalyst number 19 – Salthouse built 18, starting with the original high-performance chase boats for Emirates Team New Zealand’s 2013 Louis Vuitton and America’s Cup campaigns. Boat show judge John Harris said Rita was remarkable for her age. “She impressed us as a wooden plank runabout built in 1920, still in relatively original condition – and still used and enjoyed by her owner.” Her proud owner is Michael Hayman from Tarras in the South Island, who says Rita has been in the family for many years. “My grandfather acquired her – he would have been the third of fourth owner. All Kiwi school children will be able to learn more about sailing through a new schools programme that focuses on the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) associated with harnessing the power of the wind. The Yachting New Zealand-designed programme – Kōkōkaha – Powered by the Wind – was launched in term one 2021, and is aimed at students in years 5-10 but can easily be adapted for older and younger children. Mostly classroom-based, it’s delivered by teachers, but schools also have an opportunity to go sailing at their local club or waterway so they can put their knowledge about the wind and sailing technology into practice. The Dibley 8 Spring Loaded produced two impressive line honour wins in the annual Donald Hay Classic Race, sailed in hot and variable conditions on Lake Wakatipu in March. The 28-year-old Spring Loaded was skippered by new owner Greg Webster and crewed by Nick Webster, Richard Crouch and Kevin Dibley – none of whom had sailed together before. Webster was understandably stoked with the result. “To take line honours both days and to be awarded the Donald Hay Trophy on our first attempt was a thrill and it is a testament to the Dibley 8 design.”…

The latest offering from Northland manufacturer Offshore Boats is the 750 HT (hardtop). Jonathan Barlow and his team took their sweet-riding, Alan Walker-designed 650 HT (Boating NZ, October 2020) as their starting point, retaining the same 2.4m beam but adding a metre to her length. The extra length translates to an even bigger cockpit and a hardtop and cabin that both feel more spacious. The boat reviewed here – Elemental – is owned by Kerikeri resident Roger Talbot. Roger’s a keen angler with a particular interest in game fishing, so Elemental is fully game-rigged, including top-of-the-line OceanBlue outrigger poles, a centre-rigged pole for the shotgun lure and Offshore Boats’ standard tuna tubes set into the transom on either side. THE AMERICA’S CUP HAS highlighted the need for shock mitigation suspension seating as spectator and support boats struggle to keep up with the speeds attained by the new AC75s. Sea Sure developed its Shock-WBV units on the Solent (UK) specifically for the wind-over-tide, fast, harsh wave patterns also seen on the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland. Shock-WBV units were developed to improve the safety and comfort of the crew. Shock spikes caused by a boat’s hull repeatedly hitting waves can cause spinal damage; long-term exposure to smaller, repeated shocks also causes damage over time, including ongoing back pain. SOLENT YACHTSMAN BERTIE BICKET, Rear Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, announced his latest Fargo is a new Melges IC37, currently under construction at Fibre Mechanics in Lymington. Bertie observed: “The IC37 simply ticked more boxes than anything else on the market. Formerly known as No Xcuse, the vessel received a major overhaul at McMullen & Wing boatbuilders, with design work carried out by Auckland’s LOMOcean Design. The project saw the entire stern module replaced to accommodate a new drivetrain and engine combination. The re-design features numerous ZF components, including ZF’s SteerCommand electric steering system (a first for the region), ZF’s Joystick Manoeuvring System, I-Anchor, I-Drift, and SmartCommand systems, as well as the entire driveline with shafts and props. Good Newz is now powered by twin Scania 1,180bhp engines with ZF 2000 A transmissions. Jenco III was one of three Napier-based fishing vessels built in Norway – her sisters were Jenco I and Jenco II. Built from Norwegian pine in 1958 she was 65’ LOA and powered by a 150hp diesel. The vessels’ voyage to New Zealand (via Panama) took two months. All three had double-skinned hulls and were considered to be among the most seaworthy small craft in service at the time. For the next four years the trio operated a successful fishing business out of Hawke’s Bay. There were plans for a fourth sister, but this never eventuated. On 31 August 1962 Jenco III departed Napier. Two days later her hold held over two tonnes of fish. Captain Ole Vevand and crewman Garth Nevard decided to spend the night anchored off Castlepoint.…

Grandparents often leave a vibrant legacy in the memories of their offspring. Sometimes the memories are worth preserving and bringing back into the present in a fun way. In the middle of the last century New Zealand designer Richard Hartley and his team worked away quietly penning comfortable sea-kindly boats for a generation with a strong streak of do-it-yourself work ethic. The designs ranged from solid workboats to elegant yachts, from trailer-sailers to surf skis – and they were built in backyards, garages and behind fish and chip shops around the world. One of these DIY builders was Hamilton businessman Jim Roberts. Back in 1975 he launched Mistral – his 22ft, Hartley Voyager. It took him a few years to build her – kauri frames and mahogany plywood held together…

The Zephyr championship is New Zealand’s longest-running adult dinghy sailing national event. The full fibreglass version of the Des Townson designed 3.35m (11ft) Zephyr is designed to have the same weight and sailing characteristics as the three-skinned wooden original. The fibreglass version is built by Silverdale’s MacKay Boats (manufacturer of successful Olympic racing yachts). Manly Sailing Club commodore Barry Thom says the racing promises to be exciting with several national and world champions, Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup ‘retired sailors’ expected on the start line – all battling it out with very capable long-time top Zephyr sailors. Nick Egnot-Johnson and his KNOTS Racing crew of Niall Malone, Alastair Gifford and Ollie Gilmour survived a tricky sudden-death final to win the 2021 Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup. Going back to the Round Robin stage, the top seeding came down to a battle between the eventual finalists, with Nick Egnot-Johnson and Jordan Stevenson racing off in the final match. As is always the case with these two the race was a tight one, but it was Egnot-Johnson who claimed a narrow victory. Both finished with an eight-one record, but Egnot-Johnson snatched the top spot on a countback with the vital, final race win. This is Egnot-Johnson’s second Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup title, and it will also be his last, with the now notso-young skipper ageing out…

Seven of these glorious vessels came together in February for the 2021 Mastercard Superyacht Regatta. More were expected (Covid did the damage) but the reduced fleet nevertheless presented a superb spectacle on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. Proving that politicians are adept at turning their hands to diverse roles, Slab was skippered by National’s ex-Maungakiekie MP Denise Lee, who paddled her scow across the lagoon more quickly than any other vessel. Organised by Aotea Sea Scouts, the cardboard regatta was a slight departure from the group’s normal involvement at the annual Onehunga Festival. The scouts usually make their kayaks available at the festival – giving members of the public an opportunity to have a go. To say that 2020 was a wild year for outboard engine manufacturers would be putting things mildly. Outboard production ground to a halt early in the year with the global spread of Covid-19, then surged as infections dropped and a new generation of young families suddenly discovered boating, driving demand for boats and engines and creating worldwide shortages of both. The landscape changed even further when BRP shut down its Evinrude outboard business in May, and Volvo Penta closed the doors on its Seven Marine outboard business in November. Amid all that upheaval, the publication of a single page of recommendations for new outboard engine emission standards would be easy to overlook – all the more if it came buried in a package with dozens of other environmental proposals.
