I’ve been threatening to attend the NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show down at the South Island’s Lake Rotoiti for quite a few years – but never quite seem to get my suit together. This year, I’m pleased to report, I did manage to collect my suit – and what a treat! The Kings College team of Hamish McLaren, Oscar Little, Sam Scott and Walter Coop stormed home on the final day of the 2020 HARKEN National Secondary Schools Keelboat Championship in March to win in dominant fashion. Kings won three of the four gold fleet final races and finished second in the other to easily claim the national title. Skipper Hamish McLaren was understandably thrilled: “We were nice and relaxed out there today, full credit to the boys who worked really hard, we just stayed super-calm and sailed really well as a team. Australian James Hodgson and his crew of Harry Hall, Louis Schofield and Nick Rozenauers, were crowned HARKEN 2020 Youth Match Racing World Champions after defeating American Jack Parkin three-nil in the final in Auckland last month. The winners were ecstatic, with the entire crew diving into the water as they crossed the line for the final time. This is the second year in a row that a CYCA team has won the World title, and also the second year in a row that Hodgson – and his crew mate Harry Hall – have won the title. Extreme Boats is in expansion mode. The company recently completed a new facility specifically geared to its new division – Legacy Marine. It’s a dedicated building for producing large sportsfishers and commercial vessels – all in the company’s trademark aluminium. Hull #1 is a 70-foot sportsfisher powered by twin 1900hp MAN V12 diesels. This new Legacy range includes a 40- and a 50-footer – both still on the drawing board. Recently launched is a 12m ‘fuel barge’, the company’s first commercial vessel – built for Hauraki Express. She’s designed to carry 10,000 litres of diesel – providing a friendly fuel-delivery service for boaties caught short in the more distant parts of Hauraki Gulf. Founded in 1965, the company has built a reputation for quality and high-tech innovation. In the last five years Princess has released 13 new models and there are more to come, says Sport Marine’s Scott Williamson. Sports Marine was appointed New Zealand agent for Princess Yachts last year. Princess is a premium manufacturer owned by luxury brand conglomerate LMVH (Louis Vuitton, Moet & Chandon, Hennessy – 75 companies/brands in all) which also owns Feadship. SEALEGS’ CEO DAVID MCKEE WRIGHT announced his intention to home the first five production Electric Sealegs on Waiheke Island at the 2020 Sealegs Onetangi Beach Races. McKee Wright invited anyone on the island interested in becoming the first owners of Sealegs Electric craft to become key partners in developing the production system. Sealegs pioneered the new market segment of amphibious boating, growing it from zero to over 1500 craft in 50 countries. The event – which served as a launch of global celebrations marking Riviera’s 40th anniversary – attracted a flotilla of 106 yachts, ranging in size from 33 to 72 feet. They rafted together at Waiheke Island’s Awaawaroa Bay, creating a circle measuring 234m in diameter. The mega raft-up exceeds the previous Riviera raft-up record of 48 motor yachts, set in Perth in 2017. Over 600 Riviera enthusiasts were treated to a memorable day/evening on the water with a host of local stars performing on a purpose-built floating stage in the centre of the circle. The Cup is presented annually for the most outstanding cruise of any duration. Jim and his wife Karin were deemed worthy winners after their voyage to Auckland from the Mediterranean on their yacht Victoria. They left New Zealand (initially for Chile) in 2011. They built Victoria in Auckland and launched her in 1988. They’ve since sold her – in total she carried them some 150,000 miles. The Royal Cruising Club (RCC) was established in 1880 and is similar to the Cruising Club of America. RCC is best known for its extensive library of cruising information. By close of play for the initial entry period (29 February), 10 teams had officially entered – and the event is shaping up to be a melting pot of global youth sailing talent. Confirmed entries have been received from New Zealand, China, Australia, Italy, Hong Kong, Switzerland (2), Russia, Argentina and the Netherlands. Soon after the Notice of Race was issued last month, organisers received responses from a number of regular competitors in global superyacht regattas – the J Class Velsheda, Win Win, Pumula, Kawil and Wavelength. Sailing south-west from Miami along the glistening 125-mile chain of islands that make up the Florida Keys is a fascinating voyage. It tracks the wake of Hemingway and many other gringo conquistadors who sought to pacify this region of shifting sandbanks and storm-pummelled beaches where few monuments to men outlast the hurricane season. Our story begins in 1970 when a pair of freshly-qualified 20-year-old diesel mechanics – Ross Williamson and Hugh MacKenzie – founded Wilmac Transport Services to service the local Wellington bus and truck market. Young and keen, they quickly gained a reputation for quality service. Nearly 200km above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, the hotel is a popular stopover for tourists in search of ‘something a little different.’ Sculpted from ice in October every year, these images reflect the 30th incarnation of the hotel. A loggerhead turtle released from the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa a little over two years ago has made the most of her freedom, clocking up 37,000km since her release. Yoshi the turtle was fitted with a tracker when she was released, and recently turned up off Australia’s west coast. Her journey is a record – one of the longest migrations ever documented. She lived at the Cape Town aquarium for 20 years before being released back into the ocean. She was initially brought to the aquarium in 1997 following an injury to her shell – and she subsequently inspired the establishment of the facility’s intensive turtle rehabilitation programme. Norway’s Marit Strømøy became the first female powerboat racer to be named Driver of the Year at the 11th Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) Awards, held in Lausanne in March. One of just two women to make the seven-driver shortlist, the 43-year-old from Sandefjord made sporting history by lifting the coveted Best Driver trophy, having obtained the highest score in a social media poll and a vote by the UIM Council. The 915 sits near the upper end of Extreme’s trailer boat range, third-biggest behind the 985 and 1185. At 9.15m LOA (and weighing around 3.5 ton with engine and trailer) she’s certainly an imposing vessel, but your eye tends to be drawn to the racy, contoured hull with its sharp, aggressive lines. Unquestionably some of that’s due to attitudinal expectations, bigger being considered better. What’s really made bigger yachts even possible are the technological advances in sail handling systems. The Hanse 508 typifies these changes. DOCKSIDE Like all boats in the Hanse range, the 508’s been designed by Judel/Vrolijk, with hull and decks being GRP balsa sandwich, laid with vinylester resin and an isophthalic gelcoat. Bucking the current trend towards chines and twin rudders, the Hanse’s hull is round bilge with a deep single rudder. THE FIRST DIESEL-ELECTRIC hybrid boat to be entirely designed and built in New Zealand will make its public debut at the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show in Auckland in May. The new Herley Boats 3400 Powercat diesel-electric hybrid is a 10.4m displacement catamaran. It features twin 60/100Kw peak power electric motors with 300Nm of torque run in parallel from a 120Kw diesel generator. The genset is coupled to a permanent magnet generator and lithium-ion battery storage, allowing the system to re-charge at sea within an hour. The Herley 3400 Powercat can be operated on electric or diesel power, or on both systems simultaneously for top performance. On the old Admiralty Chart that lay unfolded on Manaroa III’s navigation table was a dotted oval with the words Sandy Island (1876). This simple note was punctuated with the letters E.D. It lay among the clutter of nearby reefs, the usual soundings of deep open ocean – and a small tea stain that had absorbed into the fine paper – and which now looked like a phantom reef in the Coral Sea. The letters stand for Existence Doubtful and how they got on the Admiralty Chart is a case of the power of authority over simple observation. Sandy islets and breakers were first sighted in the vicinity by the whaling ship Velocity in 1876. It was in an area near Bampton Reefs known for its atolls and low-lying islands.…

She belongs to Wellington’s Philip Andrew – another collector who freely admits to being a classic boat ‘nutter’. How nuts? Well, he owns four Century classics – they were all at the show – and says he’s always preferred the design/style of the mahogany-built vessels over their great rivals, the Chris Crafts. “They’re both American legends – and the rivalry (which extends to their fan base) is a bit like that between Holden and Ford. It’s been nearly four decades since the old digger took her last load of spoil from the eponymous West Coast bar harbour. Rust has holed her pitted, riveted plating and the superstructure looks ready to collapse. High tide flows into the shapely old hull and spurts back out through her many orifices. People putter by in dinghies – “oh, that’s an old fishing boat,” they speculate – but Wanganui has never carried commercial fishing gear and shows no signs of ever having been fished.
