ALTHOUGH bird migration will be in full swing, many people may think the wildlife-gardening season is winding down come September. However, the natural world doesn’t read calendars and, in truth, some of the most subtle yet spectacular moments are still to come.
This is a month of preparation and restraint – a time to resist the urge to tidy, and to start planting with wildlife in mind. One of the best things you can do now is leave seedheads standing. I know I say this a lot, and the temptation is strong to ‘clean up’ after summer’s chaos, but many birds – especially finches – will feast on the seeds of plants such as teasel, sunflower, fading lavender and verbena.
