WHY aren’t there more people like Hannah Dale and her husband Jack in the world? That was the question that repeatedly came to mind as I read Hannah’s recently published A Wilding Year, which charts the change (‘recovery’, I would argue) of a small Lincolnshire farm that they inherited from Jack’s father.
Realising that the land was barely profitable for agricultural purposes, Hannah and Jack made the decision to take it out of production following their final harvest in 2019, after taking inspiration from Isabella Tree’s book, Wilding, which charts the story behind Knepp Castle Estate in Sussex (see Birdwatch 321: 59).
