It was an unpredictable month on the birding front, with long spells characterised by unproductive westerly or south-westerly winds. Intermittent easterlies kept the migrant tap open, however, with a late spurt of fast-moving transatlantic lows bringing a handful of passerine vagrants from the New World.
A large arrival of Hawfinch occurred as the month went on, with Britain appearing on course to experience the highest totals since the historic influx of 2017-18. Strikingly, every English county recorded birds from 14th, with a high count of 105 reached at Headley Heath, Surrey.
