I’ve known Mark Avery for almost half a century and have always admired his commitment to conservation. But from what I read in his recent column (Birdwatch 387: 21), he must surely have been at a different Global Birdfair to me! Where he talks about small crowds, expensive optics and international tour companies, I saw thousands of people, of all ages and backgrounds, enjoying three great days of talks, quizzes, podcasts, workshops, children’s activities and entertainment events – all marshalled by an army of volunteers, led by the indefatigable Tim Appleton and Penny Robinson.
