GANNET
The Gannet is one of the greatest British birds. However, being a seabird and not cute like a Puffin, it is easily forgotten, though, so you won’t tend to see it in polls of the ‘best’ British bird. But it is a magnificent and exciting bird which breeds in the UK by the hundreds of thousands (well, nearly 300,000 pairs). We have a large proportion of the World’s nesting Gannets and the largest colony on Bass Rock (in the Firth of Forth) having some 75,000 pairs! Indeed, most are on offshore islands, but we have a couple of mainland Great British colonies, too, these being at Troup Head, Aberdeenshire, and at Bempton Cliffs, East Yorkshire, where you feel you could almost reach out and touch…
