AN IDENTIFICATION GUIDE TO BIRDS OF BRITAIN AND NORTHERN EUROPE PETER GOODFELLOW, JOHN BEAUFOY PUBLISHING, SB £9.99
As an entry level guide, this is excellent, dealing with 150 of the commoner species, with most of them getting a page to themselves. There are generally two clear photos of each, plus distribution maps, a factfile on size, breeding behaviour, food, habitat and voice, a concise but thorough species account, and a useful calendar. The overall introduction and general advice pages, though brief, are very useful, and it all comes in a compact, light package, easily slipped into a coat pocket. Perfect for beginners. Matt Merritt
