THESE DAYS THE light is on and shining brightly for retros. And the stream of new contenders remains in full flood – witness Royal Enfield’s great new Interceptor, Indian’s Harley worrying FTR and this here new Fantic. As is the modern way, and ironically considering the ‘retro’ pigeon hole, many of the current crop glitter with big power figures and all the electronic rider aids. Prevention is the best cure Daniel Nicklin, with his whole two years of experience, may think body armour is the best way to avoid injury ( Bike , August). But surely not having the accident is preferable. Advanced instruction is well known to substantially reduce accident risk. So, while I’m not advocating wearing flip-flops and shorts, being too hot, cold or uncomfortable in vast swathes of armoured clothing can lead to a lack of concentration. And that’s not good for any rider. Plus there are many potentially fatal injuries that no amount of leather, denim or body armour will protect against. A SPANKING NEW CB1000R is what I’ve been slated to ride when Honda’s little cavalcade sets off from a glitzy hotel on the outskirts of Barcelona. The plan: to ride through the Pyrenees and across the French border to Biarritz and the Wheels ‘n’ Waves festival (page 22). On the A2 motorway running north-east of the city and up to the foothills it seems like a good tool for the job. It’s smooth, and at the hand of programmable traction control its acceleration is effortless and stonkingly impressive. And it handles with great surety and yet a high degree of spraunce. But up in the mountains, when the N260 becomes endlessly twisty, and often tortuously so, I soon become aware that this is a bike that needs quite a lot…

PIN THE THROTTLE and the Svartpilen wheelies in first and second gears. It’ll hit the motorway speed limit in second too, on its way to an intense and engaging 9000rpm. A-road overtakes are fired out with enough urgency to easily stay in touch with the other three bikes here, despite being the smallest, and it’s perfectly content whirring smoothly at 5000rpm and 75mph in top gear. Oh, and it does 63mpg on roads and at speeds where the Indian struggles to get in the 40s – with the patience to bimble at lost tourist speed the Husqvarna’s capable of over 80 miles from a gallon. 1954 WORKS NORTON ‘LONG NOSE’ In the 1950s Norton turned to aerodynamics to keep their increasingly out of date singles competitive. Their most successful version was this ‘Long Nose’ design used in the company’s final year of GP competition. Ray Amm won the 1954 IOM Senior TT on one. The 56bhp provided a top speed of about 125mph. 1924 MCEVOY ANZANI ‘SPEED MODEL’ Look closely at the front engine mount on this 1924 McEvoy Anzani. There is a ‘hole’. THE PROBLEMS » Stories about problems caused by modern fuel are legion. Issues include poor starting, corrosion and failure of fuel system components, and distortion of plastic fuel tanks. ‘The effects are particularly bad on older bikes with carbs,’ says Wheels Motorcycles technician Gary Hurd. ‘But fuel-injected bikes aren’t immune. Ethanol can rot fuel pipes in the tank – it’s worse on older Ducatis and Aprilias with rubber pipes that disintegrate inside the tank – the Japanese tend to use metal. This debris gets into the fuel. Ethanol also destroys rubber seals and fuel pumps – all costly fixes.’ And there’s more: ‘Plastic tanks gradually swell and so can be difficult to refit,’ says independent Triumph mechanic Chris Jagger. ‘And if a bike is left standing injectors can gum up.’…

There can be a temptation, sometimes encouraged by lawyers, to overstate your case. This is especially true of riding or driving experience, or skill. I have been on the receiving end of it as well as dishing it out in Court, but the inescapable conclusion is that honesty’s always the best policy. I had a recent trial involving a bike-on-bike crash. The rider I was prosecuting a claim against made heavy weather of his years of riding, and his familiarity with his bike. Fair enough. LIVING IN THE sticks can be problematic for shops, takeaways and public transport. It does mean access to significant quantities of BOATs, however. These are byways open to all traffic – think farm tracks and trails that are public roads. After a 32 year break, I started riding again four years ago. I went to Donington and the Ron Haslam Race School to do some laps with my mate Paul and had a pretty difficult time on a CBR600RR. IT HAS NOT been a nice season for Chaz Davies. Before Donington he was eighth in the points table, an unbelievable 216 points adrift of the leader, team mate in Aruba Ducati, Alvaro Bautista. Given that Chaz was second in the championship three times in the last four years and third the other time, what the hell has happened? Shouldn’t he have been a contender with the new V4? That’s what Chaz himself thought. The fact is one Ducati has dominated, Bautista’s, the rest have floundered including – vitally – test rider Michele Pirro when he was a wild card at Misano. AFTER THE ROARING success of last year’s inaugural meet, the second Classic Suzuki trackday cracked off in blistering heat on 29 June at Cadwell. ‘Classic’ in Suzuki world means pre-2000 and saw the track-riding groups – two-stroke, up to 750cc, over 750cc – full of bikes with the letters GSX-R, SV, RGV and TL. THERE ISN’T REALLY one thing about the Yamaha that you could confidently slap on a billboard and surround in flashing lights as being ‘best’. The Indian is unanimously regarded as better looking and is way more charismatic. Husqvarna’s 701 is lighter, more accurate and gets the nod from fashionable types, while the whooshing Suzuki is faster, smoother and more comfortable on multi-lane slogs. About the only thing the MT-09 wins is the bright wheels competition. Thing is, while the three-cylinder MT-09 might not be the most powerful, fastest, sharpest, coolest, best on fuel or even have the nicest indicator switch, it’s really close on everything. That raucous, lairy engine feels perfect in the naked Duke – its bad-tempered low-rpm manners just add to the feeling that you’re riding something naughty and unhinged. But on the Adventure, it jars.
