The brief was clear. When the owner of this Paris apartment on the Left Bank asked Jacques Hervouet to redecorate it, she avowed a profound desire for change. “She told me, ‘I want it to be radically different. I want there to be nothing that reminds me of how it was before’,” says Jacques. He certainly took her at her word. The 230-square-metre space had been done out in typical Hausmannian style, with chevron parquet, lots of mouldings and elaborate ceiling decorations, but little in the way of decorating flair. In an increasingly disembodied world, the haptic of the everyday makes us happy. “Super technology is going to lead to a need for super tactility,” says Li Edelkoort, the Dutch trend forecaster known for her accurate predictions. The extraordinary diversity of housing styles in Sydney lends rich character and interest to its suburbs. This imposing house on the north shore was built in 1936 in the Spanish Mission style by architect Allan Edgecliff Stafford and is a standout in its location. Stafford had studied in California and had developed a particular skill designing so-called ‘Hollywood mansions’. The current owners bought the home in 1981 and recently engaged Kate Nixon of Studio Kate to sensitively refresh its expansive interiors. Keen to maintain the look and feel of the home, the owners requested an injection of colour and personality, re-using existing family antiques and art alongside contemporary acquisitions and custom pieces. Pettigrew House is a standout on three counts. Numero uno: it was the first completed residence of Melbourne modernist architect Robin Boyd, in tandem with Kevin Pethebridge, delivered in 1946 and now heritage listed. Second, it remained in the hands of the same owner until the widow Pettigrew relinquished it in 2015. Third, the new owners were visionary enough to engage a then little-known interior designer to reconfigure their family home. DESCRIBE YOUR OFFICE? It is minimal and functional because a lot of the work we do is visiting galleries, talking about their presentations and seeing what artists are doing. DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY? Because [this] is a once-a-year event, the workload is consistent but the emphasis changes. Most work in the office [is post-fair], refreshing application forms for the next year. Then I start to travel a lot to talk to galleries and collector groups. It’s an indication of the growing internationalisation of the art world that the number of countries that artists are from continues to grow.
