[ Darlinghurst ] TO RENOVATE THIS apartment in Horizon, an iconic Harry Seidler building on the fringe of Sydney’s CBD, the owners engaged William Smart of Smart Design Studio. smartdesignstudio.com What was the brief? This project was a large two-bedroom apartment the owners wanted to turn into three bedrooms. What were the challenges of the space and how did you resolve them? Retaining the generous penthouse living spaces while creating an extra bedroom. We devised a sliding door system so the extra room can be shut off for privacy, or enjoyed as part of the expansive open-plan living area. Glare can be a problem here so we used dark vertical elements to absorb light, and existing flooring was stained black to hide join lines. Describe the completed interior? Luxurious and…

When the owners of this double-fronted home in Melbourne engaged Mim Design for their renovation, the brief was an atypical one: to balance a Victorian residence with subtle yet traditional Japanese elements alongside sophisticated contemporary design. “The family are really strong in both their Japanese and Australian cultures,” says studio principal Miriam Fanning of her clients. “But it was important not to make the design thematic. It was about key textural aspects in shape and form with an authenticity of materials. We didn’t want a Japanese-style house, but a Japanese feel that was serene.” Although not obviously apparent – and the references subtle – Mim Design worked according to the principles of fusui, the Japanese iteration of feng shui. To say that I’m thrilled to be here at Belle is perhaps the biggest understatement of 2019. Well, for me it absolutely is. A path laden with late-night model-making and down-to-the-wire assignment submissions that was intended to be the launching ground for an interior architecture career was somewhat, let’s say, interrupted many moons ago as I accidentally stumbled into the brightly lit, dazzling, fast-paced world of media. SYDNEY A FINE BALANCE Luke Storrier’s new series began with a trip to Wilcannia, accompanied only by his dog Ace (both pictured left), where the artist was moved by the isolated, arid landscape, as well as the drought’s visible toll on local fauna. PIED-À-TERRE New York-based interior designer Magdalena Keck specialises in compact city living spaces. However, she manages to imbue them with a warmth not always seen in such environments. With a strict colour palette, layers of texture and a deft blend of pieces, her projects – ranging from a Soho loft to a Brooklyn terrace – are restrained yet feel cosy and welcoming. My husband and I had lived in Paddington for years and stumbled across this tired bungalow that had not traded or been modified in 100 years. Rising above a steep incline and earmarked with faux gothic signage, Melbourne’s 1930s heritage-listed Beverley Hills apartments are a sight to behold. With barley sugar-twist columns, bay windows, secluded porticos, decorative motifs and regal outdoor staircases, the twin Hollywood-Spanish mission-style buildings which offered a dose of romantic glamour during the Depression continue to captivate admirers decades later. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SPACE? It’s a 100-year-old butcher shop in the heritage-listed Goodman’s building in Sydney’s Annandale. With 4.5 metre-high ceilings and plenty of natural light, it’s a beautiful space to work in. It has exquisite original tiled walls, moulded tin ceiling and terrazzo floor. In the front is my shop selling film memorabilia, vintage industrial furniture and objects, and my older work. WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT THE SPACE? Its location, size, history and street frontage. I INTERVIEW MILAN-BORN, Swiss-educated architect Luigi Rosselli in a beehive, or rather The Beehive – his Surry Hills’ studio in Sydney. Its honeycomb facade was a joint effort with his architect son Raffaello, who is also interested in sustainability and re-use. “We were exploring different materials when I suggested using terracotta roof tiles discarded from a client’s house,” says Luigi. The resulting pattern is mesmeric, with the elemental warmth of the irregular tiles adding a rustic informality to what is a highly calibrated design practice. This duality runs through his approach. His hand drawings of buildings tend to be loose and lyrical but also capture the essence of the finished scheme. PARAMOUNT RECREATION CLUB is perched on the rooftop of a grand old heritage building in Surry Hills, Sydney. Nestled within the 1930s parapet, its main training room is open to the elements – a heavy translucent curtain slides across should the weather become inclement (though there’s something wonderful about feeling a southerly buster gathering force as you go through your paces). On the spacious terrace, sky-blue canvas sunshades and lush succulent plantings lend the popular meeting space a Palm Springs allure, while views out onto the medium-rise skyline create a very downtown vibe. I used my trademark approach to proportion, light and space. The apartment was stripped back to a concrete shell to develop the design concept. Raising the ceiling height from 2.7 metres to 3.2 metres to create a New York-style Soho feel was imperative. Rather than strip out existing joinery, we relined, refinished and overlaid pieces with new finishes to make them look more intentional and resolved. He sought to give the slick, minimalist architecture, built in the late 1970s but with a modernist vibe, what it deserved: a tropical-glam gloss outfitted with contemporary art and luxurious pieces well suited for a chic patio party. In making the most of an awkward site, this multi-layered, semi-formal garden on Sydney’s north shore literally reaches new heights. With not just one but two pontoons touching the mirrored waters of their man-made lake, the owners of this idyllic Mornington Peninsula garden in Main Ridge, Victoria, would have enjoyed many On Golden Pond moments, watching the sun set behind the towering eucalypts.
