THE ARTIST WHO HAS BEEN AN ENDURING INFLUENCE? I’ve always been curious about art and design as it was in my house growing up so my Dad [2] is one of my main influences. An artist who stimulated my approach to space and volume is Alexander Calder [1]. And Japanese design studio Nendo for their discipline, attention to detail and the ability to surprise by rethinking day-to-day elements. CONTEMPORARY ART YOU MOST ADMIRE? I value the power of visuals in communication. Videos evoke emotions and help convey stories. Recently I went to Bill Viola’s [8] exhibition. I admire art that is able to reach all of the senses. MAKE LIKE AN ITALIAN and entertain with what you have in your cupboards. In other words, keep it simple and intuitive. Italian food is usually very fresh and unfussy and this, too, seems to be the national modus operandi for entertaining. For Italians, sharing a meal with friends or family is about being joyous and generous – it doesn’t need to be complicated. If, like my husband, you grew up in Italy you would have a very strong sense that there is a right and wrong way to eat. An Italian meal begins with an antipasto. The design of this house in Victoria takes inspiration from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and the Glass House by Philip Johnson, explains interior designer David Hicks. How did you become involved with this project? The clients liked our holistic approach to design. They wanted a new house that was simple in its design appearance, elegant and private. What were the challenges of the site? The site was slightly undulating with amazing views of Mount Macedon. We located the house footprint on the block to take advantage of this and the northern sun. Creating a connection with the outdoors was a key concern for Travis Walton and his team of architects and designers in ensuring this rural Victorian home was a luxurious escape that also allowed the owners to feel at one with the surrounding environment. How did you become involved with this project and what was the brief? This is the second residence we have created for this family. The brief was to extend the existing residence to create more living space for their growing family while also addressing a neglected 1970s kidney-shaped swimming pool. Melburnians love to talk about the weather. The propensity to have four seasons in one day, the cold snaps, the big chills, the cool changes, the humidity, the unrelenting heat. It all makes having a pool rather a sensitive operation. A generous, glittering expanse may be ripe for summer, but at the start of autumn refreshing aqua can quickly turn into an eyesore of murky, layered debris. For their renovation, homeowners Sheree and Jonathan Burge were adamant they “didn’t want the standard paradigm of a pool collecting leaves in the backyard for a large portion of the year and not being appreciated”, recalls architect Patrick Kennedy of Kennedy Nolan. Linking the vast spaces of this waterfront house on Sydney’s Middle Harbour in a more coherent way and opening up doorways and corridors was the first step in its reinvention by interior designers Dylan and Nicolette Farrell. The magic followed soon after. “It is a really large house but it felt quite puny,” says Dylan. “There was no wow factor.” The question was how to introduce that without “bastardising the architecture”, something neither the owners nor the designers wished to do. AUSTRALIA’S TOP CREATIVE GENIUS was on display at the biennial Art of Dining event where table art reaches dizzy heights. Over 40 of the country’s most admired artists, florists, stylists, retailers, architects and interior designers decorated appropriately decadent dinner tables to raise funds for the National Gallery of Victoria. The lavish dinner is a fabulous initiative by the NGV Women’s Association – the proceeds of which have allowed the gallery to buy works by Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor, Christopher Dresser and most recently celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. HUW TURNER IS WELSH and grew up in a 19th century worker’s cottage on the top of a mountain in South Wales. In contrast, Penny Collins was raised in Sydney’s Mosman Bay in a home her architect father and mother had designed in the mid-70s. This iconic, inventive house was clad in fibreglass panels with interior walls of the upper floor lined in black felt while the lower bedroom level was starkly white. Furniture was cutting-edge Italian designs from Angelo Mangiarotti, Vico Magistretti and Alessandro Becchi. Having lived in their Hunters Hill house in Sydney for 10 years this family was very appreciative of the suburb and its attractions as well as the space and convenience of their house. But as the family’s three children had grown the layout no longer suited their needs or the way they lived. Chelsea Hing was careful to ensure her design choices complemented the surrounding landscape of this Yarra Valley home. How did you become involved with this project and what was the brief? The owners had built the house only seven years prior to engaging us to update it. They were already suffering the growing pains of not having enough space for their three boys and extended family. For owners Morgan Ferry and Bryce Kennedy it was love at first sight when this house became available in the picturesque NSW village of Berry. What was involved with this project and were alterations required? My partner Bryce and I had been looking for a country escape on the south coast of Sydney, no more than a two-hour drive from our home in Potts Point. We found this 1930s cottage in one of our favourite streets in Berry. The location – we are away from the craziness of Queen Street, Woollahra, in Moncur Street, which is such a little community. Our treelined street view was a drawcard. The building is gorgeous and its charm spoke to me. Minor alterations were required – removing walls, rendering internal walls, lighting, an awning, custom bits and pieces, while meticulously restoring the internal period details.
