WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOUR INTERIORS STYLE? For years I lived and worked in unconverted factory and warehouse spaces in the inner suburbs. I was attracted to the raw industrial aesthetic, and these spaces afforded tremendous area for making art and design. I coveted the unconventional lifestyle of living in a studio, furnishing it with unique items sourced from junk shops, auctions, and the work of my fellow artists and designers. I didn’t have a great deal of money, so I had to be inventive, up-cycling and repurposing unlikely materials and objects. When I moved into this apartment to live with my partner it was a chance to rethink my approach to domestic space. All projects, whether architectural or interiors, start with the plan. We work very hard to set a base geometry that provides the discipline behind all our projects. IT IS NOT HARD TO SEE how Rosa Coy and George Yiontis are compatible as partners in their architecture practice as well as in life. We have designed an atmospheric, moody space layered with texture. A focal point is the use of tadelakt, a traditional Moroccan method of naturally waterproofing a room. It feels and looks like velvet, creating an overall undulating chalky appearance. NEWS OF THE UNTIMELY death of architect-trained designer Brian (Patrick) Keirnan was devastating for all those whose lives he touched. He died just before his 67th birthday in November. More than 330 family, close friends and devoted clients gathered at a memorial to share their memories and stories of Brian’s life, and to celebrate his unique talent, generosity, kindness and sheer force of being that you couldn’t help but be caught up in. Before sleeping their first night in this residence in Melbourne’s Malvern, the owners performed a sage ceremony with designer Carole Whiting. DESIGNERS THOMAS HAMEL & BRENDAN GUY “The chance to renovate the lower floors of this inner-city terrace gave the owner (a keen cook) the opportunity to reimagine the existing kitchen, with only an internal courtyard for natural light, as a bright, functional space. The inglenook-style oven that restricted bench surface and was a visually heavy element was removed. The joinery design, with its subtle panel detail, was left intentionally subdued to create a sense of relaxed comfort. DESIGNER LYNNE BRADLEY “The area for the kitchen was more of an alcove than a room. My initial approach was to sensitively revise the floor plan, and unify the three ceiling heights in this area to maximise the inclusion of storage and scale. A horizontal line of flush, textured splashback tiles band across the seams of conjoined kitchen mirrors creating a vanishing line to deepen the dimensions. I used quilted brass for its noncorrosive properties and nautical reference, a saturated green paint (‘Deep Water’ by Dulux) and the exquisite rose and blush pink tones prominent in the Norwegian marble. Innovative, flush Zetr power outlets with USB were recessed into the marble step (a part of the splashback).
