While originally there were big plans for major works, the project was scaled back upon news that one of the owners had limited time to complete his dream and just a short time to enjoy it. Here at Belle, we are obsessed with all properties, great and small, so we love having the opportunity to showcase the best interiors, from grander spaces to those that are more chic and petite. And it’s fabulous to be able to include some names that may not have been featured in Belle before (p85). The challenges of smaller sites and difficult spaces and what can be achieved with some lateral thinking are always a joy to behold. I am particularly interested in these as I own a skinny terrace that needs a complete rear rework and I often dream about dropping an excavator on site via chopper! FERGUS SCOTT has a quiet intensity in the way he talks about his response to landscape and climate, refuge and outlook, and the ways of living that his clients have been able to embrace as a result. For example, by allowing these considerations to drive the building form of his Southern House it enables his client to lie in her bed with a view of Brush Island or watch a southerly buster come in, knowing she is protected and the house is anchored firmly on its coastal site. W HAT HAS INFORMED AND INSPIRED YOUR STYLE? With an architect father and a mother who for many years was a potter, I grew up surrounded by design. My interiors style has always been understated, working with a minimal palette upon which to subtract or add to – be it muted colour, matte metal finishes or textures picked up in various pieces of sculptural artworks, window treatments, furniture or floor coverings. I have always needed to live and work in a tranquil space for my equilibrium. My design evolution has not been dictated by fashion, but has become more eclectic and layered when budgets allow. “I always start with the floor, like a good pair of shoes and work up from there.” I t is gratifying that in a world where old houses in expensive suburbs go under the wrecking ball, there are still clients, architects and interior designers who see the value in breathing new life into existing properties. R estored with the Dutch sense of quirkiness and tongue-incheek style, the recently re-opened Pulitzer Hotel in Amsterdam is at the heart of the fashionable Nine Streets shopping district in the old city centre. The Pulitzer Hotel was a vision of Peter Pulitzer (the grandson of the man whose bequest established the Pulitzer Prize), to combine 12 canal houses into a hotel in the 1960s. Now occupying 25 canal houses, the hotel brings together traditional and modern design in a clash of what can be defined as quintessential Dutch style. Jacu Stauss, creative director of the project, and formerly at Tom Dixon, saw it as an opportunity to “imagine who lived here over the centuries. This is one of the most beautiful parts of California, with the waters dotted with sailing yachts and the support towers of the Golden Gate Bridge floating off in the distance. T he family home takes on a whole new meaning once the kids have flown the coop. Fewer people generally mean not as much room is required, so moving somewhere smaller tends to be the assumed next step for empty nesters. While the owners of this Melbourne home toyed with the idea of relocating to an apartment, the fondness they had for this, the property they first moved to in the 1980s, eventually won out.
