Aquatic vegetation is famously controversial on Conroe. Efforts to control invasive hydrilla with grass carp have been effective through the years, improving recreational access but reducing fish habitat. Recent collaboration by Texas Parks and Wildlife, other agencies and angling groups, including B.A.S.S., has shown promise in restoring native aquatic plants on the lake. (Five miles of the Caney Creek arm shoreline was planted in 2012-2013.)
