DS will take inspiration from the original DS 3 for the next iteration of the hatch, which will arrive in the next few years with a “sporty, hot” and “futuristic” design. Kia is considering a production version of the recent Meta Gran Turismo concept as part of plans to expand its model range with new bodystyles. The Meta Gran Turismo is a four-door low-slung GT concept. While few details have been revealed, it could potentially fit into Kia’s line-up as a sleek saloon carrying the EV7 or EV8 badge. Oliver Samson, Kia’s European design chief, said that for its next generation of cars, the firm is “thinking about different ways of design”, adding: “We want to try some new ways of treating the surfaces, maybe even introducing different silhouettes.” Asked if the Meta Turismo hinted at a future production car, Samson said: “We’re really looking into having a dialogue with our consumers, to make sure that we are not designing something…

Geely is going after the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class with the Galaxy Cruiser – and it will be sold in the UK, the Chinese firm has told Autocar. The SUV, which first appeared at the 2025 Shanghai motor show, is currently in concept form but it is very close to production, according to design studio director Flavien Dachet. Sales are due to start in China by the end of this year. While no definite date for exports has been set, Yan Tianxiao, Geely Auto UK’s marketing boss, confirmed that “we will definitely launch that car in the UK”. As a volume manufacturer, Nissan is among the most vulnerable to fast-moving, aggressive Chinese importers. “The Chinese are putting us in an uncomfortable situation,” said Max Messina, Nissan’s new head of Europe. “The pressure on the margins has been very significant.” Nissan was itself once a leading threat to the British car industry with its quality imports from Japan, but then the company was persuaded to locate manufacturing in Sunderland and went from being a threat to a local hero. A single set of roadworks can cost around £4000 in lost productivity per day, a study by Autocar and a leading data analyst has found. There were 2.2 million street works (use of equipment on or under the road) and roadworks (repairs or improvements to the highway) in England between 2023 and 2024, and over the past 10 years there has been a 30% rise in utility street works alone. More than 200 organisations are permitted to dig up roads. To find out how badly drivers are inconvenienced, data specialist Agilysis looked at work carried out by SGN (Scotia Gas Networks) on Swan Lane near Sandhurst in Berkshire. In 2020, Chinese EV start-up Xpeng really upped its game with its second model, the P7, in terms of both looks and self-driving ability. This sports saloon spurred multiple Chinese competitors, and by 2025 it was already outdated. Enter the futuristic-looking Mk2 P7. Xpeng finally entered the UK market in February 2025 with the G6 crossover, and the new P7 could well be on its way here soon. The BMW i4 might well have gone underneath the radar of a great many EV buyers when it first appeared back in 2021, when premium car makers were mostly busy producing zero-emission SUVs. BMW’s own electric hopes were pinned on the high-rise iX and more accessible iX3. DS will look to do something “completely different” and “revolutionary” with the next-generation Nº4, design chief Thierry Métroz told Autocar. At the end of last year, the French brand unveiled the heavily refreshed Nº4 hatchback, which itself ushered in a new look inspired by the radically different Nº8 flagship. But looking further ahead, Métroz said the design team is already sketching ideas for the next iteration of the car, which is likely to arrive at the end of the decade – and the plan is to “reinvent everything”. THE FORD MUSTANG Dark Horse SC has been revealed as a new track-focused variant that is designed to bring the performance of the flagship GTD to a wider audience. Developed in-house by Ford Racing, the SC essentially takes the popular Dark Horse variant of the Mk7 Mustang and adds key elements that have been honed on the GTD and its GT3 racing sibling. The new model has been created in line with Ford’s quest to ensure the Mustang rivals the likes of the Porsche 911 in offering a broad line-up to appeal to a wide range of buyers. The design of the new Nissan Juke, due later this year, will be “provocative” and “polarising”. The third, and EV-only, generation of the small crossover will be built in Sunderland alongside the new Leaf, with which it shares its CMF-BEV platform, battery and powertrains. SLAP DASH I read of Michael Anstey’s Jeep Wrangler instrument panel woes (7 January) with sympathy and a wry smile. I recently bought a lovely 1997 Cherokee 4.0 on which the instruments sometimes all die. Apparently this is due to a poor connection on the PCB [printed circuit board]. Have they learned nothing in the last 28 years? My fix is a little easier, though: following advice from an excellent forum, a sharp slap to the righthand side of the instrument cluster returns everything to normal. THE JENSEN INTERCEPTOR will be reborn as a new UK-built V8-powered GT, 50 years after production of the classic model ended. It will be created by Banbury-based Jensen International Automotive, the engineering firm that specialises in restoring and modernising Interceptors, but this new muscle car is JIA’s first clean-sheet creation. The as-yet-unnamed JIA GT, which will sit on a lightweight aluminium chassis, will sport a design “inspired” by the 1966-1976 Interceptor and is claimed to be an “ultra-high-performance” luxury proposition that will offer a fully “analogue driving experience”. Autocar understands the new car will be powered by the engine from the latest Chevrolet Corvette. LEAPMOTOR’S RANGE-extender (REx) technology for EVs could be used by other Stellantis brands in Europe as part of a move to increase “synergies” across the group. The Stellantis-backed Chinese company offers its B10 and C10 with the option of pure-electric power or a REx system, in which a small petrol engine works as a generator to charge the battery on the move. It claims the system allows the C10 Hybrid EV to travel up to 606 miles on a full battery and tank while emitting just 10g/km of CO2 in official testing. Leapmotor International CEO Tianshu Xin suggested the REx technology could also be used by its sibling brands, possibly including Citroën, Peugeot, DS, Fiat and Opel-Vauxhall. TYRE WEAR HAS always been a challenge for the people who manufacture them. Too much of it is undesirable from a value-for-money point of view, but also because as tyres wear so does the road surface, producing tiny particulates that pose an emissions problem. Friction between a tyre’s contact patch and the road is an obvious cause of wear but, says Continental, many factors contribute to the generation of tyre and road wear particles. According to Continental and the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation, these factors include (in order of rising influence on wear), weather, temperature, tyre design, vehicle, road surface, route topology and, most of all, driving behaviour. AMID THE RUBBLE of future business cases that were going to unlock billions in investor value for the car industry, robotaxis and autonomous driving are among the few still standing. Undesirable when getting to know a highly extroverted car: an audience. Only moments ago, our pit garage at Anglesey Circuit was vacant apart from a new Maserati dripping with carbon and malevolence, plus associated stacks of warmer-coddled slicks and trolley-mounted air-jack canisters. It’s a feeling akin to jet lag – that unmistakable sensation of time shifting in a way that your brain can’t immediately comprehend.
