Mercedes-AMG is gearing up for the next generation of its electric era, with work well under way on the two bookends of its “hyper-performance” line-up: the CLA 45 and a luxury SUV currently known as the GT SUV. While the luxury SUV will arrive in 2027 and be one of the initial cars to sit on AMG’s first bespoke SUV platform, the CLA 45 will break cover next year as the first Mercedes-AMG to be fitted with next-generation electric motors. INCOMING NISSAN BOSS Ivan Espinosa said “driving excitement will always be at the heart” of the firm, hinting that halo performance cars will remain part of the company’s future under its bold revitalisation plan. The 46-year-old Mexican, currently the firm’s chief planning officer, was recently named the replacement for Makoto Uchida, who resigned as CEO because of Nissan’s financial struggles and the collapse of a proposed merger deal with Honda. Espinosa outlined his plan to boost Nissan’s fortunes, with a particular focus on a more regionalised line-up and a balanced mix of powertrain technologies. TOTAL ENERGIES LUBRIFIANTS, the lubricants arm of French energy giant Total, has fitted a Renault Megane E-Tech with an immersion-cooled battery that uses a new fluid called Cell Shield – and is claimed to have halved the EV’s charging times and extended its range by 6%. Immersion cooling is a conveniently obvious term: reducing the temperature of something by putting it into a fluid. But where electrical components are concerned, that’s not as simple as it sounds, as introducing water-based fluid to the circuitry of any electrical device causes a short circuit and instant destruction. New Chinese marque Omoda has launched the 9 as its flagship model for the UK. Priced from £44,990 and due to land in showrooms from May, the plug-in hybrid is positioned to undercut rivals in the premium family SUV segment such as the BMW X3, Lexus NX and Volvo XC60. The 9 is powered by a 1.5- litre turbo petrol engine and two electric motors (one per axle), which combine to send 443bhp and 516lb ft of torque through all four wheels via a three-speed automatic gearbox. The motors draw energy from a new 34.4kWh battery from Chinese giant CATL. Ron Petersen’s letter about his struggles to obtain spare parts for his JLR cars (19 March) made me reflect on the relationship between JLR dealers’ staff and loyal customers. It’s easy to vent at the person you deal with, but the relationship with them can make all the difference in a frustrating situation for all involved. I had the great pleasure of dealing with surely the greatest of all Land Rover salesmen in Iain Robertson of Park’s Land Rover in Ayr [pictured centre, with colleagues]. IT SHOULD ALWAYS hold true that the heavier a car becomes, the less efficient it becomes, all other things being equal – which, of course, they seldom are. Our recent road test of the Skoda Elroq (19 March) focused on the higher-end 85 derivative, which has the biggest battery available, carrying some 170kg more than the entry-level 50 tested here. So how come this lighter Elroq has poorer efficiency (3.9mpkWh versus 4.1mpkWh)? Because the cheaper models use the Volkswagen Group’s older APP310 motor, while the 85 gets the new APP550, with its cleverer inverter and more efficient ‘hybrid synchronous’ design. Growing Jeep’s dealer network is a key focus for Kris Cholmondeley, who insists that a brand’s success is “70% product, 20% dealer network, 10% head office”. He says: “They [dealers] are the connection to our customers, so they’re more important than us in head office. That’s a humility and understanding we want to retain. It seemed rude not to take a drive in Fellten’s electric Mini, fitted with a conversion kit that doesn’t require any modification from standard. The EV weighs the same as the original car, has the same weight distribution, offers a 110-mile range, packs 100bhp, accelerates from 0-60mph in 8.0sec and steers and rides just like a Mini always did. The battery has a mere 19kWh capacity, so it’s small enough to fit under the bonnet and not take up any of the Mini’s celebrated cabin or boot space. “The Little G will feature a unibody construction and new battery for a range of more than 434 miles” Mercedes-Benz is ramping up the development of its entry-level G-Class, a smaller 4x4 that will be pitched against the Land Rover Defender 90 when it arrives in 2027. The highly anticipated model, currently referred to as ‘Little G’, will be a sibling to the larger, legendary offroader and sold exclusively as an EV. Nissan will ramp up its EV presence in Europe this year with the arrival of the third-generation Leaf – reinvented as a crossover with more than 370 miles of range – and the revived Micra hatchback. The two models, which have now been shown in production form for the first time, will be joined next year by the radically styled Juke EV. The Leaf and closely related Juke will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland factory. When launched in 2010, the Leaf was one of the first mass-market EVs and took the form of a hatchback for its first two generations. A number of UK-based car makers have expressed “outrage” and “disappointment” at US president Donald Trump’s move to impose a 25% import tariff on all cars and car parts (see reactions, below). The new levy was due to come into effect today (2 April) on top of the 2.5% duty already paid. Trump said the new tariff will lead to “tremendous growth” for the US automotive industry, boosting investment and creating jobs. Around eight million cars were imported into the US last year, which is roughly half the country’s total sales. Mexico will be the country hit hardest by the new levy. I neos Automotive will launch the delayed Fusilier 4x4 “in 2028 or 2029”, confirming its commitment to becoming a multi-model, massmarket car maker. The follow-up to the Grenadier 4x4 was shown in concept form last year and planned to go on sale in 2027 as both a pure EV and a range-extender (REx). According to CEO Lynn Calder, the delay “is all driven by [doubts about] powertrain” and “from regulators in key markets, notably in the EU and UK”. A PEUGEOT E-208 GTi is in the works and will arrive “as soon as possible”, recently installed boss Alain Favey has confirmed. It will be the first GTi model since the previous-generation 308 went off sale in 2021 and Peugeot’s first sporty electric car. “We’ve made the decision that Peugeot GTi will be reintroduced,” said Favey. When asked about other GTi models, or if there are plans for the badge to adorn an ICE car again, Favey said the brand would listen to customer feedback. THE RENAULT 5 has ruined it for everyone. It’s stylish, good to drive and affordable, yet it feels expensive. How is anyone to compete with that? In the long term, makers of electric hatchbacks need to step up their game. In the short term, it’s better not to engage. Citroën is in a decent position in this respect with the ë-C4. It has done the old Skoda trick of taking the basis of a small car and building a bigger but cheaper car on top. The Green Lane Association (GLASS) aims to encourage and assist motor vehicle users to safely and responsibly use legal byways. Funded by members, it promotes greenlaning by protecting access to unsurfaced roads, helping to maintain them and making it easier for people to use them. That includes TW2 (trailwise2.co.uk), an online tool containing information on every known legal green lane, and the development of the GLASS code of conduct. Nissan remains committed to the long-term future of its Sunderland factory and regards it as a key element in its future European electrification plans, according to the firm’s planning boss for Europe, François Bailly. The Japanese firm has pumped around £2 billion into the plant to build the next-gen Leaf, Juke and Qashqai EVs, but there had been uncertainty around its future because Nissan plans to close three factories by the end of 2026 amid major cost-cutting. Asked by Autocar if the Sunderland plant’s future is safe, Bailly – who will shortly become Nissan’s global product boss – said: “Yes, very safe. It’s the jewel of Europe. This year has started very badly for theprospects of hydrogen being the answer to the question of what will fuel future road vehicles. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have for many years been touted as both a bridge towards and a future alternative to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), given that they can be fuelled in a similar way and in a similar time to internal combustion-engined vehicles. For mass adoption of FCEVs to occur, everyone agrees that a substantial network of fuelling stations is needed. But that dream has already been handed several blows in 2025. At the start of March, hydrogen company H2 Mobility announced that it was shutting 22 carfocused fuel stations in Germany, citing a strategic shift towards goods and commercial vehicles. VOLVO HAS MADE some big, bold and seemingly binding statements in recent years, most notably that it would be EV-only by 2030, only to later have to change course. It’s not the only brand to have done so, and product boss Erik Severinson says “a very flexible and agile mindset” is now needed when it comes to bringing cars to market - or keeping existing ones on sale. “We’ve seen the transition to full electric taking longer than we thought a few years ago, which is why we’re investing in plug-in hybrids and facelifts for the XC90,” he said. A SUPERB REPLACEMENT I’ve owned many, many cars in my 53 years of motoring. I just recently exchanged my 67-reg Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TSI SEL with 23k miles on the clock. I owned it for six years (my longest ownership ever), and it was the best car I’ve ever owned. I loved it: it was perfect, doing everything I wanted and more. However, it was time for a change. The obvious choice was the new Tiguan. I wanted the 261bhp engine, but that’s only available in R-Line trim. My local dealer finally had an Elegance version in the showroom, and oh how disappointed I was. No real improvement. The interior was poor. That huge touchscreen, no physical climate controls, even harder plastics everywhere… So the search resumed – and lasted…

The Jeep Avenger to me has always felt slightly oxymoronic, as a diddy hatchback from a brand so intrinsically associated with goany-where mud-plugging. But now it can follow its stablemates at least some way off the beaten track with the addition of a 4xe hybrid model, which gets a tougher look and four-wheel drive. It’s the Jeepiest version of the least Jeepy Jeep. While it’s far removed in its billing from the CJs and Wranglers that went before, there is a whiff of the WW2 original about this car’s Scrappy-Doo character. “Lemme at ’em!” it yelps, brandishing its beefier bumpers, roof bars, tow hooks and underbody cladding. It has an unusual powertrain, combining the mild-hybridised 1.2-litre three-pot petrol engine from the Avenger eHybrid with a pair of 28bhp electric motors…

The Lotus Emira has had a moderately tumultuous start to life. You could argue this makes it an authentic Lotus from the off, even if that probably wasn’t the intention. Back in 2017, Geely acquired a 51% stake in Lotus (with 49% remaining with Malaysian firm Etika), with grand plans to turn it into a true Porsche rival. After the turnaround that Volvo experienced under Geely ownership, hopes were high. Indeed, as well as a new factory in Wuhan, China, to build the electric Eletre SUV and Emeya saloon, another was built in Hethel to assemble the sports cars. You could spend £25,000 on a brand-new Dacia Bigster (driven, p22) to fill the role as your main family wagon – or you could save almost £20,000 and buy a desirable, spacious and comfortable samesized Land Rover instead. Launched in late 2014 as the successor to the Freelander, the Discovery Sport was pitched as a leisure-focused seven-seater to spearhead a whole new family of Discovery models.
