Announced last week by Jaguar Land Rover’s incoming CEO, Thierry Bolloré, the new plan is designed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2039. It means the axing of some new models that were on the verge of being revealed, and the acceleration of investment in key technologies like hydrogen fuel cells. Limited-run Morgan GTR marks V8’s return BRITISH sports car maker Morgan will revive its iconic Plus 8 model with this aggressively styled GTR that references Morgan’s racers from the nineties. The model (above) will be limited to nine units and will be the first V8 Morgan since the company axed the Aero 8 model in 2019. BREAKING the speed limit is far less socially acceptable than it was five years ago, according to fresh research. The latest annual Safety Culture Report from IAM RoadSmart surveyed 2,000 UK drivers, and found 43 per cent think driving at 80mph on the motorway is acceptable, down from 55 per cent in 2016. In addition, 23 per cent say exceeding 80mph on motorways is reasonable, down from 28 per cent. Most say breaking urban limits is unacceptable, but a fifth think going 5mph over a residential limit is okay. One in 10 see no issue with speeding in a school zone. There were 1,580 road deaths in the year ending June 2020, down 14 per cent year-on-year, but speeding remains a major factor in a third of all collisions.…

The latest wagon is 66mm longer than before, and its wheelbase is now 2,686mm – 67mm more than for a five-door Golf. That translates into 38mm extra rear legroom, according to VW. JLR’s announcement that Jaguar is to be a 100 per cent EV brand is very good news, but saying that isn’t exactly earth-shattering any more. EV alone is not a differentiator given that most new cars by 2030/35 will be electric. Jaguar has no niche like the German premiums, so it needs to define its space to build a profitable position. The firm is entering a market dominated by Tesla. Also, if Tesla buys its batteries at allegedly $80 per kWh based on forward volumes, Jaguar’s volume is not planned to be that high so they’ll probably pay more. FORD has confirmed that its next electric car will arrive in two years’ time, as Auto Express revealed exclusively last week (Issue 1,665). In an announcement, the American manufacturer said that its next electric model would be built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform for EVs, after the two automotive giants signed a deal in 2019 to share tech.
