THE number of vehicle thefts has risen by nearly a third in the past three years, as criminals increasingly use hi-tech devices to bypass modern security systems, new figures reveal.
Last year, 85,688 vehicles were stolen in England and Wales, up from 65,783 in 2013, according to Freedom of Information requests sent by RAC Insurance. The cover provider attributes the 30 per cent rise partly to more thieves using advanced means such as scanners to pick up a key’s signal from afar, prompting calls for a return to oldschool anti-theft devices like steering locks.
