ALREADY 2015 was shaping up to be a stellar year for new hot hatches, and now Peugeot has waded in with a full-fat performance version of the 308. Badged GTi, not R (as hinted at by the 2013 308 R concept), it’s available with a choice of two power outputs – 247bhp and 266bhp – both with their chassis tuned by the brand’s motorsport arm, Peugeot Sport. The 308 GTi is positioned above the warm 308 GT, but directly opposite the 247bhp Ford Focus ST and 276bhp SEAT Leon Cupra. New Duster pick-up debuts as a Renault RENAULT has unveiled a new pick-up at the Buenos Aires Motor Show. The Duster Oroch is for emerging South American markets only, and it won’t be made available in the UK or Europe. The double-cab (above) is relatively unchanged at the front from sister firm Dacia’s standard Duster 4x4, and is due to launch later in the year. However, Renault has confirmed a separate pickup for the UK within the next two years. Bentley swims in with Beluga special BENTLEY has introduced a special edition of its Flying Spur saloon. IT’S a milestone for Land Rover, as the two-millionth Defender has rolled off the line. It marks 67 years of production at the Solihull plant in the West Midlands, which will stop making the 4x4 for good at the end of 2015. The landmark ‘Defender 2,000,000’ is a bespoke model that’s been assembled by an all-star cast including Bear Grylls, and commemorated with plaques. The car will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week, before being sold at an exclusive Bonhams charity auction on 16 December, just before Defender production ends. The auction will raise funds for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Born Free Foundation. WE’VE been chauffeured around in a camouflaged prototype (Issue 1,373) and seen countless spy shots, but it’s only now that Mercedes has fully revealed its BMW X3 and Audi Q5 rival, the GLC. Replacing the GLK SUV in its global lineup (a car that was never converted to right-hand drive or sold in the UK), the GLC is based on the same underpinnings as the new C-Class, but offers more interior space than the saloon and is claimed to have class-leading off-road ability. WITH the arrival of an all-new A4 now imminent, Audi is well underway with development on the swish new A5 Coupé. Spied for the first time, it will share all its mechanical running gear with the A4 saloon, but adopt a more rakish three-door body, as previewed by our exclusive image. Although the car in our spy shots is disguised, tell-tale signs indicate it will feature the exaggerated proportions of the upcoming A4. A WAVE of new models including an all-new DBX crossover is on the horizon for Aston Martin – and their arrival will see one of the brand’s most fabled cars put out to pasture. The 12-year-old DB9 will be replaced next year with an all-new model, currently dubbed DB11 (see opposite) – and as a final send-off for the V12 coupé, Aston’s introduced the DB9 GT. Q Wires cause stereo stress I’M trying to install an aftermarket stereo in my Volkswagen Golf Mk4, but with the wiring adaptors and harnesses, it’s too tight to fit the head unit in. JAGUAR Land Rover has developed a raft of new technologies that includes your car being able to read your mind and a system that lets you take control of your vehicle remotely using your phone. Mind Sense tech, unveiled in a Jaguar ‘Sixth Sense XJ’, uses brain waves to detect concentration levels and prevent accidents. It’s in the early stages of development, and could send vibrations to the steering wheel or pedals if it detects a loss of concentration. A NEW law to make it easier for consumers to tackle unsatisfactory service from car makers comes into force from 9 July. The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) legislation requires all UK businesses to pass unhappy customers on to a recognised resolution service. The Government has appointed the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) to appoint recognised ADR providers. It’s unclear how many have applied for the CTSI endorsement, but auto industry regulator Motor Codes is one of the favourites to be the first motor ‘ombudsman’ to operate in this area of consumer law.…

Track focus PERFORMANCE modes are the current trend. SEAT’s switchable Drive Profiles let you tailor the different settings, but with no data readouts. Honda’s +R mode is less customisable yet provides extra info, including a 0-62mph timer. And Renault’s RS Monitor gives performance readouts such as cornering g-force. ’Ring record SEAT started the hot hatch war with its Nürburgring lap record of 7:58.12, which Renault’s 275 then knocked four seconds off. Honda has now shattered this with a blistering 7:50.63 time, making it the fastest front-wheel-drive hatch to lap the track. I LIKE the idea of MPVs – or vans with windows, as I affectionately call them. Trouble is, they don’t always live up to their claimed multi-purpose credentials.
