“If the JCW stretches your budget too far, but you like the MINI’s more premium interior and badge image, there is an alternative. The Cooper S still packs plenty of poke from a detuned 189bhp version of the JCW’s 2.0-litre turbo engine, and is £4,215 cheaper. It’s half-a-second slower from 0-62mph, according to the company’s claims, and best of all, it’s also available as a five-door to boost the car’s pretty limited practicality.” James Disdale Chief reviewer
