By the time you get round to reading this, the 2018 Photographer of the Year will be officially open for entries. For 2018 the essence of the competition remains the same as in past years—we’re looking for the best work by amateur photographers in Australia and New Zealand—and to help find them, we’ve assembled a diverse judging panel and a prize pool that is the biggest in the more than five years we’ve run the competition. Have you ever tried to shoot slow shutter speeds without a tripod? Shutter speeds that were once absolute prerequisites for shooting on a tripod are now literally in your creative hands due to image stabilisation technology and importantly, good technique. Yes, you will still hear some photographers say that you must use a tripod, especially if you have a large megapixel (MP) camera. That’s fine, but rules are meant to be broken, right? As a landscape photographer I’ve travelled to most countries in the world, and I’ve photographed everything from Ice Caves and the Aurora in the north, the autumn colours in Patagonia in the south, and the sandy deserts of the Middle East. But when it comes to real challenges, storm chasing stands alone as a true test of my ability to capture nature’s fury in a fast paced and ever-changing environment. PANASONIC LUMIX FT7 DEBUTS WITH ELECTRONIC VIEWFINDER PANASONIC has announced its Lumix DC-FT7 action camera, the first waterproof and rugged compact with an electronic viewfinder. The new camera is able to go to 31m underwater, can survive a 2m fall, and is capable of withstanding 100kg of crushing force. The viewfinder has a resolution equivalent to 1.17 million dots and a magnification of 0.45x equivalent. There’s also a 3-inch LCD for composing and reviewing photos, although it’s non-touch in functionality. Inside, the FT7 features a 20.4MP, 1/2.3” BSI CMOS sensor and an f/3.3-5.9, 28-128mm equivalent lens. There’s also a 49-point contrast-detect AF system, which Panasonic claims can track a moving subject at 5 fps. The FT7 can shoot 4K video at 24p and 30p, 1080p at 60p and 720p at…

1 SHOOT WIDER As a wildlife photographer, an essential piece of equipment is a super-telephoto lens. I have a Nikon 200-400mm f4 which will set you back $10,000. However, my Nikon 50mm f1.4, which cost around $500, has easily made 10 times more money. A common misjudgement many people make is to always use a longer lens to get close to the subject, rather than taking the time to get physically nearer. Closing the distance on a wild animal isn’t always easy; if it were, everyone would do it, however in my experience if you make the effort to seek out the opportunity to sneak up on a critter, your shots will definitely impress a broader audience. The competition offered 10 categories in this year’s photography competition, up from last year’s four: street, people, landscape, wildlife/animal, black and white, architecture/cityscapes, sports, fashion, wedding and stories (documentary). ‘The Farrier’ is a portrait of Matt Maliki in Merrijig, Victoria. I was camping out in Mansfield at my partner Linton's Dad's place and I mentioned that I would love to photograph a farrier. Fortuitously, his friends Bruce and Debra were over. They were having their horses shod and proposed I photograph one of the farriers. I work best under pressure, and so I jumped into action and we swung past her place the next day to do a recce. Bruce and I discussed the logistics including the possibility of having multiple animals in the one shot, but I was concerned with the horses’ comfort, being so close together. We also discussed styling the set by adding props such as hay bales, hanging ropes and Driza-Bones to add depth and…

THIS MONTH’S WINNER TOM SHEPPARD Title: Night Flight EDITOR’S COMMENT To capture this shot of a flock of cattle egrets on their nightly migration Tom tells us he chose a slow shutter speed and panned with the birds as they flew by. Panning can be an effective technique, but it’s deceptively difficult to do well. The slow shutter speed has stripped the image back to its simplest shapes and yet, there’s enough in this picture that we can still recognise the movement of the birds through the night sky, if only vaguely. Like an impressionist painting, detail is sacrificed in favour of conveying something more fleeting and emotive. Spending ten years straight travelling around Australia would just be a dream for many photographers, but for Dean Cooper it was a way of life in the late 1980s. In his early twenties he left his home town of Perth in a bus he owned with his then wife. For the next decade they saw the country, completing “two or three laps around Australia” in the process. During this period he discovered a love of landscape photography, something he says developed into “a fairly obsessive hobby” at the time. Not surprising, perhaps, considering the quality of scenes he had to work with along the way. Creativity and artistic expression in photography has been my passion since my early days with film cameras. As camera technology developed, I bought my first digital camera, the Canon 300D. My interest in the photographic world was further stimulated as I explored different genres of photography. After attending a number of photography courses I realised my real passion was to create beautiful, artistic imagery with careful attention to detail. After undertaking some studio lighting courses with professional photographers, I pursued my dream of having my own studio and equipment.
