The only way to reach the idyllic Greek island of Symi in the Dodecanese is by sea, and as the ferry rounds the cliffs, you get your first glimpse of the port across the deep, sapphire waters. Rows of traditional stone mansions painted in indigo, ochre, terracotta, pink and lemon are stacked one on top of the other, climbing the side of the mountain and separated from the sea by a line of sleek yachts and traditional fishing boats.
