IF THE carp in the lake you’re fishing are heavily targeted with pop-ups, then switching to a wafter or a bottom bait is a quick and easy way to fool the fish that have wised up to buoyant offerings. This presentation is easy to tie and, because of the stiff fluorocarbon material used, it’s almost impossible for it to tangle on the cast. Plus, the material is virtually invisible under the water. STALKING carp essentially describes fishing for carp where you can actually see them. Having said that, this piece will cover any short-range situation where you are compelled to fish a single rod, often without any kind of bite indication, with just the rod laid on the ground. I HAVE to chuckle sometimes when I listen to anglers putting fish into pigeonholes. By that I mean things like people saying barbel and tench are solely bottom feeders, when over the past few years I’ve caught perhaps 80% of my barbel up in the water, usually at half-depth, and my last two big hauls of tench (over 15 fish) were taken with the float set at 3ft in a swim 8ft deep! Carp anglers found out years ago that fishing 100% of your time on the bottom is a very inefficient way of targeting the species. WENSUM ROACH FEATURE, 1976 WHILE it would be fair in some cases to say that river anglers have never had it so good, there are some notable exceptions, perhaps none more so than Norfolk’s River Wensum in the mid-1970s.
