A little club water close to my home produced a handful of different 3lb-plus fish last winter, and after a quick enquiry to the very friendly bailiff I discovered that a three-pounder had been caught a few days earlier in a match. ON A MIXED commercial fishery, it can be hard to know which route to go down – do you take the carp gamble, knowing you could catch nothing, or play it safe and go for bites from small silverfish? In an ideal world you’d try to do both! ! What’s the best bait to use for freelining for chub? David Marshall, Poole A Obviously, you need to wait for low-water, or normal flows, when freelining, but it’s a vastly underrated method. There are so many good baits that I wouldn’t rule anything out – chub will eat the most unusual things! However, there are few I’d class as my favourites, and these can be fished in many ways, from being rolled with the flow down a swim, to being fished almost static or presented into far-bank cover or under rafts. OUT WITH A FLOURISH LAST week was my last bash at carp fishing ahead of the winter, at Monkhall Fishery. On the two-day mini festival, 30 of us lined up and I drew peg 2 on Hawk Lake, where I fished for ide for the first half of the match and had 100 fish of 1lb apiece on maggots at 11m on the deck.
