“People wonder why I named my company as I did,” says Edyta Sitar, owner of Laundry Basket Quilts. “It’s not because I love doing laundry! TIN MAN BRINGS ME JOY I am a professor, poet, and fiber artist who began quilting in 2000. I like to use patterns that resonate with me, such as the Bear’s Paw quilt I made for my son’s 21st birthday, which recalls my great-grandmother Bearpaw. I named this quilt Tin Man because the Oklahoma Boomer block looks like the character of that name from one of my favorite classic movies, The Wizard of Oz. CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved applique pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge.
