Over the past two decades, my hair has been snipped, dry-cut, and shaved—yep, shaved—into nearly every length and shape imaginable. 1 Prep dry hair with texturizing spray for a little volume and a lot of grip, says hairstylist Cash Lawless, who likes Kenra Volume Spray 25. When that’s done, divide your hair into four even(ish) sections, grab the two in the back, and knot them. “It’s a basic knot,” says Lawless, “like tying your shoes.” Slide a small bobby pin into the top of the knot for hold. 2 Pull the front sections back, crossing them in an X just over the top of the knot. Counterintuitive though it may be for this time of year, we’re digging hair as dark and lustrous as a raven’s wing, from root to tip. “Dark, rich hair automatically looks healthy, as if it’s never been touched with dyes or heat,” says colorist Tracey Cunningham, who took Emma Stone’s hair from golden red to chocolate with a tinted gloss. “It’s basically conditioner with color,” Cunningham says. “It makes your hair incredibly shiny”—a look that works in any season.…

Call it dermatological sadomasochism: having someone pierce your face with hundreds of tiny needles. Microneedling — puncturing the skin to boost skin-smoothing collagen—has been around since the ’80s, but it’s enjoying a renaissance. Why? “Dermatologists used to use individual needles or rollers. Those things on the left are not medieval lint brushes. They’re two of the many “dermarollers” available for anyone who wants to needle her face at home. Manufacturers recommend weekly or even daily use, but many doctors issue one major caveat emptor: “There’s virtually no way you can keep these rollers clean enough to avoid infection,” says Tina Alster, a clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Before you go down a Google hole of home remedies, know that “the only topical treatment with evidence-based efficacy is minoxidil,” says Neil Sadick, a dermatologist in New York City who specializes in hair loss.
